Great Northern plans a Wil liston depot with bids due soon. The project mirrors Minot’s new depot, with construction hoped to start in July or August. The Commercial club helped secure land and urged location at Main street to benefit the railroad and the city.
Washington reports say the Payne tariff bill draft will raise barley duties from 15 to 30 cents, with Senator McCumber backing the move. A minority report may follow if lumber duties stay and hides remain on the list. Minnesota and North Dakota, major barley producers, would feel the impact as the amended rates face a likely close vote.
In Grand Forks County the township assessor Elmer Swenson, elected but not owning real estate, faces removal after county records confirm the law requires real estate ownership to hold assessor office. Officials plan to appoint a temporary replacement as the issue tests the statute.
Fred Wegley plans a new pool hall with a lunch counter and a first-class short-order cook. He returned to the city last week and expects to be ready for business by Monday April 19.

Minot N D April 8 Secretary R A Nestos of the Y M C A received a telegram from the Slayton lecture bureau setting May 8 as the governor’s appearance date here Governor Johnson was to appear April 3 but the Minnesota legislature remains in session until April 23 causing the postponement.
State Senator E. B. Neal of Garrison North Dakota travels to Washington to push appointing an army engineer at Sioux City Iowa to advance upper Missouri river navigation. He cites Kansas City engineers as biased and points to congressional funds spent south of Kansas City as proof of discrimination. The Iowa and North Dakota delegations support the change.
Williston announces next Market day on Saturday April 17 to be held at the city square. The usual auction sale accompanies store bargains drawing large crowds. Advertisers are urged to use ample space in ads just as in storefronts.

Postal examinations will be held at the Williston post office on May eighth for a carrier on Rural Route number three to be established June first. The route runs from Williston to Bonetrails Higley Frederickson and back to Williston. Blanks available at the post office. Call the Williston postmaster for details.
John Lehnert of Howard visited Williston last week to discuss a butter plant. He would not consider starting with fewer than 100 cows. The Commercial club secretary has compiled cow counts in the region and finds many more cows nearby, boosting the project prospects.
Edwin Albert Knutson of Zach and Grace Hattie Wentzel of Ray wed yesterday morning at ten in the Methodist parsonage. Rev. Hollett performed the ceremony.
