Special agents get to work in North Dakota land case
Fargo April 5 special agents of the general land office arrived to investigate North Dakota homesteads held up for possible mining value. John M Blumer and John McIlwee began work with plans for a western sweep into Williams and Billings counties. McIlwee will survey batches of twenty homesteads then report to the chief in Fargo and on to Washington. The field division chief is W S Wade, previously a longtime agent in land office work.

Sheriff Detains Suspected Horse Thief in Minot
In Minot North Dakota on April 5 Sheriff Sorenson arrested William Lambert Barr Duff on suspicion of horse theft. Dan a Brown of Moose Jaw identified the stolen horses and gear as his property, while the buggy and harness may belong to another owner. The horses were found at Scofield s livery barn. Deputy Dick Steinpfer aided the investigation.

John Bruegger Elected Mayor in Wide Vote Sweep
John Bruegger won the mayoralty defeating Joseph Wegley in a lively city election with about five hundred twenty five votes cast and a large share before midday. Bruegger carried every ward by a margin of 111 with four-fifths of ballots by one oclock. Vote on Tariff Bill Scheduled for Friday
Washington April 5 the final vote on the Payne tariff bill was fixed for 3 o clock next Friday in a rule reported to the house by the rules committee. The rule limits amendments to those from the ways and means committee and to the lumber hides barley and barley malt paragraphs and allows a 25 percent ad valorem on petroleum. The senate received protests against the Payne bill ratified the French extradition treaty and confirmed several nominations.
