Moving to the Country Draws Retirees and Youth Back
John C. White reports that retirees and young people are returning to nonmetropolitan areas reversing a 30 year trend. USDA figures show small towns grew 4.2 percent from 1970 to 1973 while urban areas rose 2.9 percent. Factors include more retirees, new rural jobs, more state colleges, recreation growth, and higher rural birthrates. Outmigration in farm regions is slowing. In 1974 farm work ages 14 plus numbered over 2.7 million, up about 34,000 from 1973.
