Mrs. Leta Harper a Whitewright High School business teacher and Drill Team sponsor was injured Friday when she fell on bleachers at a Van Alstyne football game. She underwent spleen removal surgery and is in Room 16 at Sherman Community Hospital.
Allen Layman son of Mr and Mrs Ross Layman placed first in his class with his black steer at the Trenton FFA and FHA Project Show last Saturday He then won Reserve Champion Steer in the championship class and earned a red ribbon with another steer Reid Pittman showed his main cann ui steer in heavyweight class placing fourth Mark Woodruff showed a Santa Gertrudis bull in breeding class placing first and later Reserve Breed Champion Kyle Rogers and Allen competed in Showmanship Class but did not place The Whitewright FFA Chapter members were accompanied by chapter advisor Jack Rogers
The first Junior Class meeting elected officers and council reps. Julie Johnson became president, Doug Capps vice president and reporter, Jan Neathery secretary, Tammie Wortham treasurer. Ricky D. Rice and Doug Capps were Student Council representatives. Sponsors are Annette Snider and Jack Rogers.
Holly Jones was elected president of the Ya Ki Ne chapter of Campfire Girls at a school cafeteria meeting on Monday. Other officers named include Donna Staley as vice president Mellisa Brinkley as secretary treasurer Johnna Norwood as reporter and Teresa Hardin as sponsor. Sue Brinkley leads the group with Veda Norwood and Younda Floyd serving as sponsors.
Linda Sullivan reports the Whitewright PTO wrestling event drew about 800 attendees, netting roughly $600 for the high school tennis court project. Appreciation extended to concession helpers, ticket sellers, and local businesses. next fundraiser is a Fall Festival Carnival on November 1.
Grayson County Sheriff Woody Blanton died Saturday in Sherman at 63 after a long service since 1950. Chief Deputy Shelby Bowling will run the office until the county Commissioners Court acts. Blanton, a WWII veteran and former Denison High standout, led major cases including the 1958 disappearance of Euclid Fant and was honored by state officials at his funeral in Sherman.
Marine Private Bobby L. Potter, son of Mr and Mrs Delbert L Potter of Bells Texas, graduated from recruit training at Parris Island. The report notes emphasis on physical conditioning discipline and teamwork along with drill history first aid and uniform regulations. In a separate Friday night grid match Whitewright defeated Van Alstyne 7 to 0 in a hard fought clash marked by strong defense and missed scoring chances.
In Whitewright area several women pursue a half day preschool for ages three to five. It would focus on social language motor and academic skills through play with activities like cutting coloring crafts and field trips. Non profit, tuition based on cost and ability to pay, pending further parent interest.
South Grayson area cities collected 9,251.33 in sales tax rebates announced by Texas Comptroller Bob Bullock in Austin. Van Alstyne led with 3,265.47, Whitewright 1,155.75, Howe 1,863.54, Anna 1,101.31, Bells 406.47, Gunter 940.19, and Tom Bean 518.60. The state deducts a 2 percent service fee and 4.76 percent retained for later distribution to cities from the 1 cent tax. Texas total is five percent on purchases excluding food.
Frank Sherman of Paris district governor of Lions was guest speaker at the Savoy Lions Club meeting. Hicks Graves of Petty deputy district governor attended. They presented a Lionism program and the club voted to sponsor a blood donor drive with the Texoma Regional Blood Bank on Oct 8 at the high school. Larry Little can provide information. Brown Bibby reported Sunn Side Cemetery road graveling completed.
Whitewright Pee-Wee football started Sept 13 with a 22-8 win over Howe No 2 as Kevin Ballard scored the opening TD and Terry Lankford caught a 25 yard pass from Travis Clark. Ballard added the third TD and the defense shined.
