Soap Shortage Continues After War Efforts End
Washington. The Department of Agriculture warns soap will remain scarce for at least a year as controls disappear. Prices have already surged 50 to 60 percent on popular brands with no reliable forecast. Experts cite wartime explosives, loss of foreign copra sources, meat shortages, and labor problems as causes. Prior to the war the U S used two billion pounds of fats and oils yearly for soap, mainly animal fats and coconut oil. The department notes unprecedented meat demand has reduced fat availability, lowering excess fat from meat and shifting supplies away from soap production.
