Death of a Prominent Citizen Judge Maria Welker Passes Away

Judge Martin Welker, a lifelong Ohio jurist and former U.S. district judge, died at his Beall Ave home on Saturday afternoon March 15 in the 88th year of age. Born April 26, 1819, in Fox County, he rose from limited schooling to the Ohio legislature, a governorship, and long federal service before retirement in 1889. He was twice married to Maria Armor and Flora Ubi, with no surviving children from the first union. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Beall Ave home with local clergy and a quartet providing music, reflecting on his public career and firm stance in law.

City Council Supports Sewer Plan for College and North Bever

At the regular Monday meeting the sewer committee reported favorably on sewering College Avenue and North Bever Street if property owner consent is obtained. The light committee proposed placing an electric light at College Avenue and University Street, a renewal contract with Canton workhouse was adopted.

Hon L R Critchfield Rev H W Lowry and others led funeral rites in a vault ceremony with conductors presenting the services.

Death of a Wayne County Soldier Major General David Sloane Stanley

Major General David Sloane Stanley aged 74 died at his Washington DC home on March 13. Born June 1, 1828 near Congress in Chester township he was brother to Newt Stanley of Congress township and Henry Stanley of Wooster. A West Point graduate of 1852 he served in the Civil War and reached brigadier general. He married Miss Anus M. Wright in 1857.

Grand Organ Recital Opens Memorial Chapel Pipe Organ

Tuesday evening March 18 marks the opening of the Memorial Chapel pipe organ with Edwin H Lemare of Carnegie Institute giving the inaugural recital. The program includes works by Holling, Wagner, Bach, Dubois, and Mendelssohn, featuring improvised sections and a strong display of organ color and technique.

Death of Mrs. Mattie Odell Wife of T G Odell

Mrs. Mattie Odell wife of T G Odell Pennsylvania Lines agent at Lakeville died Sunday March 16 at Allegheny Pa where she had been receiving treatment She was born in Wooster daughter of Thomas Beall and descendant of General Reason Beall Beall Avenue named for the general She was 55 and survived by her husband and one son Hele Odell of Pasadena Cal Funeral services were held at Lakeville and interment followed at Newkirk Cemetery.
