Last Friday afternoon near Wooster Jacob Brenneman a farmer four miles south of Wooster was injured when a horse attached to a hay tedder driven by his son ran away. Brenneman, caught as he tried to halt the horse, was dragged by the machine and crushed, suffering severe head and spine injuries.
At a Wooster board of education meeting Prof. J. W. Hooke of Muncie Ind is hired as instructor in penmanship drawing and commercial branches at sixty five dollars per month. He has held positions in Bucyrus and Muncie and will teach shorthand. a new course in drawing and bookkeeping will be added with full four year program. The board also reelected Philip Ells as permanent truant officer and discussed the Walnut street school building.
A two year old girl from near Springville lost two fingers and suffered severe hand injury when she reached into a moving hay hook pulley at J. W Harpater’s home near Reedaburg. Amputation was necessary. The incident occurred while men hauled hay with a hook. Parents were present.
H F Pocock and Ralph Pocock were in the city early this week for staking the glass factory buildings. The big stack building will start immediately along with a lime storage shed. A large number of glass blowers will be brought from New Jersey to Weester.
County records show Dow tax paid to the treasury for May through November totaling 96 13 00. Eighteen saloons are listed in Wooster Osmille Daylestown Dalton Wet Lebanon Dr Elder and others with varying payments. Local officials report the figures as tax revenue from licensed establishments.
In Young Manhood at noon Sunday July 13 Harry B Levenberger age 30 died at his Bloomington home after months of lung and throat disease. Born in China he was the son of Rev J A Leyenberger and wife missionaries. He graduated from the University of Wooster in 1898 and married Annie Cunningham. Survived by wife and mother. Private funeral set for 2 pm Tuesday. Rev H W Lowry officiating. Pallbearers listed.
Letters to the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station warn of chinch bug threat to corn and oats. Advice urges immediate large scale control using fungus limited in supply, traps, tar, cultivation, and kerosene emulsion to protect next year’s crop. Twenty applicants sat Thursday and Friday July 11 and 12 in the third ward school for teachers in Wooster public schools. All passed with certificates awarded ranging from five to two years based on experience and high grades.

Two freight engines on the Pennsylvania Lines collided at Millbrook coal chutes when one engine backed onto the main track to get water. Both locomotives derailed and badly wrecked as they traveled about 15 mph. The east bound engine faced blame for the mishap. Separately, a freight train derailed at Leetonia, ten coke cars wrecked and the track blocked for miles.
The executive committee of the University board of trustees awarded Gaylord and Hia Penac of Binghampton NY the heating and ventilating contract for University buildings. The total cost for work, materials, and apparatus is $40,000. The system is described as one of the most perfect and complete.
The Wayne County Soldiers' Association met at Grand Army hall to set the reunion date, appoint officers, and form general arrangements committees. Capt. Benny Muller was elected treasurer to fill the vacancy from John Caskey’s death. executive and general committees were formed with representatives from each township and Wooster ward. August 27 was set for the reunion.

Miss Helen Clinedinst of Wooster and Harrison W. Drake of Duluth were married at the bride’s mother’s home on Noldave Thursday morning July 10. Rev Dr. of Oneida conducted the ceremony with mandolin music. The couple will reside in Duluth where Mr Drake is a shoe firm manager. Mrs Drake taught in Wooster and in Duluth public schools.
Probate court proceedings before Judge Adair issued orders of sale for estates of Joseph Correll Earl Nixon and others. Hearings set for August 1 on multiple guardianship and administration accounts. various executors filed accounts and exceptions. Will and probate actions include Becket Becker letters, Wood guardianship, and distributions for Long, Shaffer, and Ferrenbaugh estates.
The United States Civil Service Commission will hold an examination on August 12 1902 in Cleveland Ohio to establish an eligible register for positions in the Eighteenth Internal Revenue District of Ohio. Details and scope follow sections 34 and 133 of the revised Manual of Examinations dated January 1 1902. Age limit is 21 years or over.
