Workers Face Destitution as Result of Order
Washington, January 18. Sam Gompers, president of the American Federation of Labor, warns that the fuel restriction order will worsen workers' misery. He questions a five day industry shutdown and suggests an eight hour basic day during the war. He urges employers to heed Garfield’s appeal to protect labor from unnecessary suffering and notes protests across the country about wage loss and costs of living. He argues eight hour workdays would be wiser than legal holidays and urges industry captains to show patriotism by complying.
