New orders to draft exemption boards specify prompt physical exams for all class 1 registrants and strict limits on enlistments abroad. Instruction from Adj. Gen. Lagsn follows Gen. Crowder, stressing immediate appearance for medicals to avoid delaying the remaining 55 percent quota.
Mrs. M Fee obtained 31655 and costs in district court against coal merchant William J Schlienern for an overcharge of 21.65. After paying 55.50 per ton in chilly weather, she pursued legal action noting government price rises did not void the contract. The judge awarded judgment and costs.
The Perry Gas works owner John A Reed plans legal action against the city of Perry Iowa to raise gas rates from $1.50 after five years. Reed alleges the plant is not paying under current conditions and the city council has filed the rate at 1 50 but the matter will go to court for decision.
From the auditor of state a pamphlet titled Report on Municipal Finances for year ending March 31 1917 lists populations and valuations for Iowa cities based on the 1915 census. In Jowa Falls Iowa on January 18 marriages were announced for Vivian Kiemme and C W Elis of Chisago. Vivian, daughter of Mr and Mrs C Kiemme, is a Dows high school, University of Illinois and Champaign School of Normal Music graduate and a Gamma Beta Nu member. C W Elis is a salesman for a Pennsylvania steel company and will reside in Jowa Falls. Ralph Stevens and Miss Vera Wareham were married here by Rev Hardcastle. Vera, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Wareham, is a teacher and Ellsworth college student. Stevens works in a clerical role at Syndicate Clothing. They will live here.
A Dubuque fair in June 1864 raised over 50000 for the sanitary commission, with 250 to the soldiers home and 7000 for agents and headquarters. Two Iowa fairs followed in Muscatine and Burlington, netting about 45000 for Christian and sanitary causes, while Burlington and Muscatine gave portions to Soldiers Aid societies. Opposition arose in Muscatine over politics, yet the State Historical Society notes little impact on the overall effort.

The Clarksville canning factory is now an assured fact. The Clarksville Canning Company formed after a Wednesday meeting at the new ielty hall. Officers elected include President Jake Wackertarth and Vice President J. P. Neat Clarksville. Secretary-Treasurer W. Strippel. Board members are G. H. Egenfritz and Dr. W. E. Dar. Superintendent Hirsch presented plans for a new street and factory site between Seymour Vance and Frank Matott, near Jefferson street. The main building will be 34 by 60 feet, three stories, with sheds and engine room. space for a second line of machinery. Farmers supported the project. plant capacity is 600 acreage for the season, with 400 pledged.

St. Louis January 18 Bren Melia Brossard of Kirkwood Missouri teacher of French at Soldan High School in St Louis has received word that she has been honored by France for her teaching and service.
A Packerville Connecticut justice of the peace recounts severe rheumatism after Spanish American War service. After five doctors and failed remedies, taking Williams Pink Pills led to full recovery. The ad notes pills aid blood and nerves, with a booklet offered free and availability from druggists.
A Waterloo woman describes long standing stomach troubles and claims Mayr's Wonderful Remedy cured her after six doses. The ad asserts the product removes mucus from the intestinal tract and helps various abdominal ailments and promises money back. Wangler Bros Stewarts Drug Store and Hansen and Hassen distribute the remedy.
Miss Brossard has been decorated by the French government and received an honorary degree from the educational department of France, a first for any person outside France. She earned it by teaching French at a local hospital to Red Cross nurses and soldiers at Jefferson Barracks without compensation. The degree is typically awarded to distinguished professors in France, with no other American known to have received it.
