Large Onions A New Money Crop For Avery County
Avery County farmers in western North Carolina are growing large Ebenezer onions as a new money crop. Since 1929, six farmers produced 6 000 pounds selling at 3 cents a pound, and in 1930 forty farmers planted 20 bushels for 5 000 pounds sold at 3 cents. The crop is tied to cabbage, uses 9-5-5 fertilizer, matures in August, and yields may reach 50 000 pounds this fall. The onions thrive on rich garden spots and creek bottom lands.
