Texans Repel Invasion at Sabine Pass in Civil War Echo
The Sabine Pass defense led by Lt. Dowling and 47 Coast Guardsmen 160 years ago repelled a Union force of 1 200, capturing two gunboats and 350 prisoners while fending off heavy ships with six cannons. Modern guards at Sabine Pass reflect on the historic victory and ongoing patrols, as townsfolk aided the battle effort. The piece also notes a Syracuse forestry collection of authentic wood specimens.
