Cannons Added to Coastal Jets for Cuban Threat
NORAD officials announced six barrel Vulcan 20 mm cannons are being installed on about 50 F104 jets stationed at Homestead and Webb Air Force Base to boost defense against MiG fighters from Cuba. The guns will supplement Sidewinder missiles and were chosen for their high rate of fire and air-to-air combat effectiveness.

UPI report says Premier Khrushchev claimed the Soviet Union has photographed United States military sites from outer space in a jesting remark during a Kremlin discussion. Former Sen. William Benton said Khrushchev offered to share Soviet photos with President Johnson if Washington would reciprocate. White House declined immediate comment. Benton, heading Britannica, traveled from Moscow to Paris where Khrushchev spoke.

Washington cabin burned on McCulley farm near Columbus City
A five room Washington area cabin on the Dean McCulley farm six miles southeast of Columbus City burned to the ground around 6 30 p m Thursday. Owned by Roy Rotzinger and George Miles the structure near a lake by the Iowa River was unoccupied when the blaze started after the men had planned to spend the weekend there. Neighbors saw smoke, Columbus Junction fire company responded but the fire was already out of control. The cause remains undetermined.
