Susy enjoyed a big midweek gathering with about forty guests at an annual picnic. They fished, ate popcorn and soda, and shared a swing that gave everyone a cheerful memory.
Fidel Castro ordered a state of alert for Cuban military and civilians after accusing US marines at Guantanamo of provocation. He blasted Secretary of State Rusk and Pentagon claims, denounced US leaders as cowards and criminals, and rejected protest messages via the Swiss ambassador.
Six Mystere IV jets crash in Spain and Portugal after a training flight from Cazaux Air Base France. Five pilots are reported at Tabalada Seville airbase with no injuries. A sixth pilot is en route. fog or weather kept landing at San Pablo from aiding refuel. Capt. Bertrand Olivier says he lost his way.
UPI reports American forces in two divisions killed 466 Viet Cong in 12 days of fighting. The 25th Infantry Division finished Operation Wahiawa with 155 guerrillas killed and 10 captured, 35 miles northwest of Saigon. The 1st Air Cavalry Division in the Vinh Thanh valley scored 311 guerrilla kills in Operation Crazy Horse, 275 miles north of Saigon. Attacks on Green Beret camps and Dong Hoa show Viet Cong targeting smaller posts for propaganda gains.
United Press International reports millions hit the highways for the first big holiday weekend. The National Safety Council predicts 460 to 540 traffic deaths and about 25 000 injuries over Memorial Day. Police nationwide on alert, rest stations set up, highway construction halted in some states. Chicago readies a 30 000 march down Michigan Avenue and Thich Nhat Hanh joins a peace service at Rockefeller Chapel. Johnson proclaims a day of prayer for peace amid ongoing war.
A slender man armed with a sawed off shotgun robbed a Des Moines service station today. Attendant Robert Johnson, washing a car outside, was ordered into the office and told to open the cash drawer. The robber examined the till, asked if it was all the money, and fled with the money.
Five year old Cindy Benson and her brothers Dwight 4 and Gerald 2 were found dead in an abandoned shed refrigerator on the family farm near Roller Coaster Hill east of Sioux City. The siblings were last seen alive at 2 p.m. and died between 2 30 and 3 p.m. Police and the county medical examiner said the cause was apparent suffocation. The victims were children of Dewayne and (Mrs.) Benson, who had moved from Ponca and South Sioux City. Funeral arrangements were pending.
A campaign to raise 350000 for a new three story brick unit at United Presbyterian Home in Washington is underway led by Supt Richard Colby with Dr George Kerr and a mail campaign targeting southeastern Iowa churches. The plan adds 27 rooms with private baths and elevator access to Sherman Hall, enabling 71 residents total. occupancy depends on fund drive success and bids may be sought in August.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk said the Honolulu plan to back military actions in South Viet Nam with civilian programs has not yet taken effect. He cited time needed to train rural construction workers, noting four thousand seven hundred graduates and a September class of about five thousand, limiting rural construction to a few hundred of 15,000 hamlets this year.

Thunderstorm chances exist in the extreme south tonight and early Sunday, with cooler air in the south. Lows range from 45 to 50 degrees, highs in the 60s to lower 70s, with Sunday outlook sunny and mild.
