96th Washington High commencement honors scholars

The 96th annual commencement at Washington High School honored scholarship recipients chosen by faculty. Winners include Diana Marie Hammen and Thomas Lowe with top awards, plus multiple Rotary Kiwanis and Legion scholarships. Four Class of 1966 speakers delivered talks as Supt Phleger and other officials presented diplomas.

Family of six slain in Warren Township home

In Warren Township Trumbull County, a steelworker Michael Collins 31 killed his wife Minnie Collins 29 and their four children David 7 Andy 6 Silas 4 and Viola 3 before likely killing himself. The victims were found in their beds with shots to the head and Mrs Collins stabbed multiple times.

Guerrillas Clash With South Vietnamese In Major Attack

About 1,000 Communist guerrillas struck a 350-man South Vietnamese battalion in a day long battle 68 miles southwest of Saigon. Vietnamese forces later recaptured the position. U.S. and allied units reported dozens of enemy dead and significant material losses across multiple hotspots as B52s and aircraft conducted strikes.

Teachers Honored at Washington May Breakfast

Long service teachers in the Washington school system and Supt. John V. Phleger were recognized at the annual May breakfast of the Washington Teachers Association at the high school. Awards honored ten, fifteen, twenty and forty year veterans, with Phleger receiving a farewell gift as he departs for Geneseo Illinois. Officers for the coming year were named and guests attended as the Swingin Demons performed.

Ky says Hue rebel leader not against me amid Saigon riots

Premier Nguyen Cao Ky said the Hue rebel leader Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chanh Thi was not against him as Americans evacuated Thi’s Hue stronghold. In Saigon thousands of Buddhist youths battled police amid tear gas and rioting, burning and protests against the government and U.S. presence.

Californian Arrested in Cedar Rapids Armed Robbery Case

A 31 year old California man Paul Donald Smith was arrested in Cedar Rapids and charged with armed robbery and criminal assault in the Swisher farm wife raid. He was found driving a rented car after dawn and is to be arraigned at Coralville Police Court. The assault occurred Thursday on a rural road near Swisher. the victim, Mrs Joseph Novotny, 37, described a gun pointed demand for money, a $5 theft, binding and rape, with her two children returning home as the offender fled in a Dodge Charger. Police traced two rental cars from Chicago O'Hare and Cedar Rapids areas and identified smith by vehicle description. The initial custody charge was carrying a concealed weapon.

Negro Green Beret buried with full military honors

A 19 year old Black U S Army paratrooper Pfc Jimmy L Williams of Wetumpka Alabama will be buried with full military honors at Andersonville National Cemetery after his grave in the town's segregated cemetery was denied due to no vacancies The case drew attention as his mother rejected a pauper plot and spoke of equal burial rights and non segregation The funeral arrangements were set for Sunday with burial Monday or Tuesday at the national cemetery in Georgia and the family faced conflicting statements from officials and relatives

Turncoat Admits Assisting Reds in Broadcast Propaganda

Clarence Co Adams a 37 year old Memphis Negro and Korean War turncoat arrived from Communist China and told reporters he volunteered to tape radio broadcasts for the National Liberation Front and the Viet Cong. He said he made political propaganda aimed at discouraging American Negro soldiers in Vietnam from fighting, urging them to seek equality.

Baby arrives in a Dallas bottling plant lobby

Tom Rubio sped to a Dallas plant with his wife in labor. Nurses at the scene and Mrs Evelyn Wormser helped deliver baby Tom Rubio IV in the car. Mother and child weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces and were said to be doing well at Baylor University Medical Center. The event interrupted a childbirth class at the plant auditorium.
