At Andersonville Georgia a Green Beret burial preceded a solemn Arlington tribute where President Johnson laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. In Valley Forge a Medal of Honor recipient received the Freedom Leadership Medal. An antiwar group at Washington protested by urging bond cashing.

Washington Memorial Day Observances Across Two Cemeteries
The Washington community paused to honor war dead with Memorial Day ceremonies at Elm Grove and Woodlawn cemeteries. Veterans groups, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire girls and National Guard units joined a parade from the square to the cemeteries as REV. Peterson and speakers addressed crowds. The Marine Corps Detachment held a flag raising at the post office and Navy veterans observed a ceremony on McLaughlin bridge along highway 1. The Washington Municipal Band performed in Central Park during the events.

Plan meetings on county planning Washington June series
The first in a series of information meetings on the Washington County Planning Program will be held at the County Court House in Washington on June 1 at 7 30 p m. Residents of Cedar Franklin and Washington townships are prioritized but others may attend. County Zoning Commission Board of Supervisors and Powers and Associates will outline work, recommendations and adoption procedures with a question period and displays of preliminary reports. Future meetings are planned June 13 Crawfordsville June 15 Highland Community School and June 22 Mid-Prairie High School Wellman with a Brighton area meeting in Rubio June 20.

Calamity the ostrich roams Illinois after escape
In Champaign Illinois a 7 foot 300 pound ostrich named Calamity escaped from a mobile horse trailer en route from Springfield to Urbana. Police chased the bird at speed and a search was organized to recover it. Owner Jean Holder warns the bird is dangerous but asks people not to shoot and describes capture by corralling with horses or jeeps.

Memorial Day traffic toll climbs past four hundred
The Memorial Day weekend death toll rose to at least 406 from traffic accidents since Friday, with 84 drownings and 59 miscellaneous deaths. Michigan led states with 31 fatalities, followed by California and New York with 27 each, then Pennsylvania 23 and Illinois and Florida with 20.

Anti US protests greet nuclear sub visit in Yokosuka
Thousands of Japanese leftists including Communists and Socialists marched in Yokosuka protesting the U S Navy submarine visit. Police clashed with 700 students, 13 demonstrators were arrested, and organizers expected up to 100000 at rallies through Wednesday near the U S naval base.

Buddhist protests grow as monk self immolations mount in Saigon
In Saigon three Buddhist monks self immolated in two days in protest of the military government. A moderate leader Thich Tam Chau demanded Premier Ky yield to a caretaker government until elections. Blood wrote letters to President Johnson urging an end to aid to Ky as demonstrations swell.

The United States launched Surveyor 1 on a 63 hour flight to the moon aiming for a soft landing near potential Apollo sites by 1969. Astronauts Stafford and Cernan watched as Atlas Centaur propelled the 113-foot rocket skyward on Memorial Day, with cameras ready to relay lunar imagery live.

U S troops repel two attacks in Vietnam drive
U S troops beat off two attacks in the Central Highlands and killed about 100 North Vietnamese regulars in a two day battle. Government troops killed an estimated 160 guerrillas in a pre dawn fight north. B 52s hit a Viet Cong regimental HQ to support Operation Crazy Horse. Helicopter troops have killed 311 Communists in 14 day operation. Memorial Day services were held in Saigon with a letter from a fallen soldier’s father.
