House Group Approves One Year Rent Control Extension
The House banking committee approved a bill to extend rent controls for one year on a local option basis, with the expiration of the present law set for June 30. Municipalities could opt out between June 30 and December 31, and from December 31 to June 1951 would stay under federal control only if local votes favor continued control. The measure, sponsored by Brent Spence, passed 13 to 4, shifting control to cities. Truman had pressed for a year without limits.
