Washington High School honors mark year end Class Day
The Washington High School Class Day featured awards for scholastic work and achievements in science music and athletics. Claire Davis was named valedictorian and Dan Holland salutatorian while juniors and seniors joined the National Honor Society. Principal Robert Everetts announced the names with Paul Brock as master of ceremonies, and the class will was read by Dick Tweeten Dan Holland and Claire Davis. The Hi Life school annual was presented by JoAnn Wilson with music instructors Melvin Hill and Wendell Rider contributing performances.

Plane Crash Kills Sixteen in Azores
SHREVEPORT LA. A B 29 from Barksdale Air Force base crashed in the Azores last night killing all 16 aboard. The bomber developed engine trouble on a flight to England and crashed during an attempted landing at Lagens air base. Eleven crewmen and five passengers, all military, were aboard. The crash happened about 7 p m. local time.

Switchmen Union Calls Strike Across Western Railroads
The AFL Switchmen's Union urged a strike next Tuesday against 10 railroads including Chicago and Great Western and Denver and Rio Grande to press for a 40 hour week with pay at present levels. Union President Arthur J. Gover said 6,000 switchmen would walk out while officials may avert action. Three other unions have similar wage demands pending.

Lockridge Man Arrested for OMVI
Otto F. Graft of Lockridge waived a preliminary hearing on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was arrested by the highway patrol last night and will appear in district court tomorrow. He was released on bond.

John N Work 78 of route 2 Washington died late Wednesday afternoon after years of poor health. Born January 22 1872 in Washington county to John and Sarah Low Work he married Glenn Cook February 27 1892. A farmer he lived most of his life in the county except two years in Arkansas. Survived by his wife one son Guy two brothers Clarence of Haskins and Charles of Washington and one sister Mrs R A Warner of Washington. Funeral 2 p m Friday at Shermans funeral home burial in Elim Grove cemetery.

New Bus Schedules Now in Effect Here
Ray Lowe manager of the 92 Cafe and the Washington bus depot announced today that several buses were added to existing schedules. Connections to large metropolitan areas improved travel in and out of Washington. Routes include Muscatine Davenport and Chicago at 5:25 am and 4:05 pm westbound at 5:30 am and 4:55 pm northbound to Town City and Cedar Rapids at 10:50 am 7:35 pm and 10:50 pm southbound to Ottumwa at 6:40 am and 3:05 pm for Fort Madison a Sunday special bus runs to Fort Madison at 3:10 pm and returns. Depot hours are 9:30 am to 11 pm daily.
