The final date to place 1949 corn under loan or sign a purchase agreement is May 31, 1950. Howard L. Witting reports 647,000 bushels loaned and 60,000 bushels under purchase agreements in Washington County. Loans mature July 31, 1950 with reseal or delivery options in August and September.
Two persons were slightly injured when two trucks collided on the county home road near Washington city limits. Mose Levy of Kalona and Herbert Grady of Husker ville Nebraska were treated for cuts and lacerations. Grady’s truck struck Levy’s as Levy turned left onto a side road. Levy’s truck sustained 350 dollars in damage. Grady’s 75 dollars.
Harold Semler of Wellman won the calf catching event at the Keota Brown Swiss district cattle show and judging contest this morning. The two mile chase ended with Harold catching the calf, and he will receive a purebred Brown Swiss heifer next September.
The State Interim Committee met in Washington to review lake Darling work. Members included J Coburn and W Johannes with Alden Douds and Leroy Mercer, plus others from Iowa. They met with the Conservation Commission and Izaak Walton League, toured the lake site, and noted the dam and spillway nearing completion. Luncheon guests included Mrs Kozak and others in Davenport.

Des Moines UP reports Dean Martin Tollefson of Drake University Law School announces his bid for a seat on the Iowa Supreme Court. Nominations come from the Republican judicial convention in July with three justices to be elected in November. Existing justices Bliss Hays retire or seek reelection and Morrison announces candidacy for the same nomination.

The West Chester New Haven and Grace Hill churches will host a combined Vacation Bible School from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily starting Monday, at West Chester church for space and facilities. A new feature is daily Sound motion pictures. All children in the communities are invited.
A subcommittee heard sworn testimony that Sally Dewey, a former inspector, alleged a St. Louis Army finance center employee tried to steal 700 uncashed servicemen's checks. Dewey testified guards followed the employee after she took a package containing the checks and dropped it in a desk.

Seven Russian ships including two fishing boats and five tugs appeared near the British home fleet base at Portland on the eve of exercises. They claimed to be en route from the Baltic to the Black Sea and sought shelter in Christ Church Bay for two disabled ships. an RN officer boarded one vessel and was told no assistance was needed before the convoy departed in formation to the west.

Two U S airmen held prisoner by Chinese communists for 19 months returned home to Hawaii. U.S. defense leaders say NATO plan in London makes the United States solely responsible for atomic and long-range bombing in wartime. The Navy would largely handle global sea lanes, and funding may push the 1950 budget beyond $13 billion. President Truman had optimistic wartime spending cuts.
The Sixth Judicial District Bar Association adopted a unanimous resolution endorsing E. D. Morrison Jr. of Washington for the Iowa Supreme Court and urging support at the Republican State Judicial convention. Morrison, now vice president of the association, spoke at the Spring Institute in Oskaloosa along with Pro. Frank B. Kennedy and Dan C. Dutcher.
United States Secretary of State Dean Acheson told reporters in Liverpool that America will maintain a continuing interest in European affairs beyond the end of the European recovery program in 1952. He spoke aboard the Britannic after Western Big Three talks and Atlantic Pact decisions. He endorsed continued aid and security for Greece Turkey and Iran and backed pooling Germany and France steel and coal.
