Alaska pipeline approved by Morton amid environmental clash
Interior Secretary Rogers C. Morton granted a right of way permit for the Alaska oil pipeline to move from North Slope to Valdez, rejecting a Canada route as delaying the project. He said the United States must reduce oil imports and deliver Prudhoe Bay crude to the West Coast promptly. Environmental groups led by the Environmental Defense Fund vowed court action to block the permit, arguing irreparable Arctic damage and spill risks. Spokesmen for Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. said construction could begin next year despite lawsuits.

House votes to raise minimum wage toward $2 per hour
The House backed a GOP substitute to raise the federal minimum wage from $1.60 to $2.00 in stages, with a two month step to $1.80 and a year later to $2.00. The plan covers about 34 million workers, with 3 million post-1966 workers largely under $2. The bill also raises farm wages to $1.50 and contemplates broadening coverage for government workers and domestic workers in later steps.
