At Bellingham Bay on Thursday about 300 dime store balloons and several dozen red weather balloons floated with the word mine. The display followed boats going out Tuesday night to lay the symbols in protest of mining of North Vietnamese harbors.
The New Jersey Senate voted 22 to 10 to reinstate the death penalty though final approval from the Assembly and the governor is still required. The measure follows a state court ruling earlier this year declaring the capital punishment statute unconstitutional. The bill had previously fallen four votes short before Thursday's approval.
Federal agents arrested Nathan N. Marks, 28, on a federal warrant in Santa Monica California for a scheme to drop bombs from a private plane on Las Vegas casinos to extort 2 million dollars. Bail set at 500000. A Texas partner notified the FBI and agreed to inform authorities.
A Iowa Democratic party leader said Muskie delegates should support Sen. Harold Hughes if Muskie withdraws from the 1972 race. Edris Owens of Newton urged the Iowa Muskie delegates to pledge Hughes as a second choice, regardless of Muskie's decision.
The National Transportation Safety Board reports 59 215 Americans died in 1971 from transportation accidents including 55 000 auto deaths. The toll rose 421 from 1970 with auto deaths up 200.
A strong thunderstorm system flooded central Texas with three days of rain overflowing the Guadalupe River. A man and his wife were swept from their home near New Braunfels and presumed drowned as water rose to five feet in places. National Guard and Ft. Sam Houston helicopters aided evacuations for 100 to 125 families amid widespread rescues. Funnel clouds were sighted near Denver and scattered showers hit the Gulf Coast as weather varied nationwide.
Writer-photographer John M Zielinski promotes a six year study of Iowa Amish and Mesquakie Indians through a book The Amish People of the Soil and a touring exhibit funded by the Iowa Arts Council The work aims to preserve heritage and foster understanding in libraries schools and communities He plans a 16 mm documentary combining stills and live footage with a soundtrack to depict daily life in Iowa ethnic groups.

The Washington Jaycees voted to sponsor the Miss Washington County Pageant again this summer in conjunction with the county fair. The decision followed a Tuesday meeting at Willows Supper Club with Gordon Gillesby, a Washington Junior High student, as featured speaker.
Occasional showers and thundershowers are likely over the state tonight and Saturday. Lows tonight range from the upper 40s in the north to the lower 50s in the south. Highs Saturday will be in the 60s to around 70, from northwest to southeast.
James L. Lockhart, renowned wildlife artist from Lake Forest Illinois, attends the McCleery-Cumming Million Dollar Club meeting May 11 13. He creates animals fish and birds for McCleery-Cumming calendars including the 1972 Wildlife Calendar Book which won a national award from the Printing Industries of America. Lockhart has previously won first place in two national graphics competitions.
Space researchers at the Houston Manned Spacecraft Center report lunar soil mixtured seedlings grew best. In tests with lunar material lava-based soil and Hawaiian basalt, lunar samples produced the most nutritious growth with in some cases plants doubling or tripling growth speed. Dr. Charles Walkinshaw presented the findings at a space medicine seminar.
