AFS Benefit Program Set For May 16 At High School

The annual AFS benefit will be held Tuesday evening May 16 at 8 p.m. in the Washington High School auditorium with master of ceremonies James Heilman and performances by the Hi-Fi's Swing Band Jazz Band and local Thespians. Admission is free but voluntary contributions aid bringing a foreign exchange student to Washington High next year. This year’s AFS student is Brigitte Pruess. The Retail Merchants Bureau of the Washington Chamber of Commerce meets at 9 30 a.m. Tuesday in the basement of Iowa Southern Utilities. Chamber manager Bill Whittenburg says the second half retail promotion calendar is ready for scrutiny.

Meeting on 1971 OSHA Act at Lincoln Elementary gym

Area employers and employees are reminded of an 8 p.m. Tuesday meeting in the Lincoln Elementary gym to explain the federal Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1971. A Des Moines safety engineer will discuss the law and answer questions about penalties for non compliance.

Three calls warned of a bomb at United Presbyterian Church during Sunday School forcing cancellation and evacuation. Police and sheriff searched the building and found no device. Officials vow to find the caller, calling it a sick person.

Mexican students tour rural Midwest during U S visit

Fourteen Mexican economics students and two State Department interpreters spent a three day rural Midwest stay as part of a broader U S itinerary from Washington to San Francisco. The group joined local families for a jazz festival and potluck, with a ten day economics seminar at the University of Alabama the trip’s core. Hector Morales Corrales, a National Polytechnic Institute student, spoke through an interpreter about his plans to serve Mexico and pursue graduate work in the United States, noting Americans are kind and hardworking.

Kalona Heads To Vote On New $80,000 Pool Bond

Kalona voters decide on an $80,000 swimming pool bond backed by Mayor Richard Adams and six community service clubs. Newly enfranchised 18 to 21 year olds may swing the outcome as 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. polls open at the town hall. If approved, a 3.75 millage increase would fund construction costs rising from prior estimates.

E. K. Ward Dies in Highway 78 Car Crash

E. E. Ward 76 of Washington died in a two car crash near Dickey's Prairie Home Cafe on Highway 78. Linda Blair 32 and her son Scottie 9 of Ankeny also perished. Roger Blair and Mrs. Ward were injured and listed in satisfactory condition. Funeral services for Ward pending at Jones Funeral Home.

Vogel brothers die in crash near Van Horne

Two Benton County high school students and former Keota residents John Vogel 16 and Greg Vogel 17 died in a head on collision on a rural road near Van Horne while reportedly attempting to pass a school bus. Merlin Hanson 36 from Clutter was hospitalized in Cedar Rapids in good condition. Greg was due to graduate soon.

County weighs legality of selling timber reserve walnut trees

The Iowa county Conservation Board seeks a legal opinion from attorney John Baldrige on selling 18 walnut trees in Hayes Timber reserve near Washington. A bid of 20 200.20 was recorded, with risks the sale could forfeit the reserve and funds possibly go to the board rather than the county.
