City hires eight youths for summer work in Washington

Washington adds eight teens to summer payroll from 29 applicants signaling ample youth labor but a need for more jobs for high schoolers and returning college students. Washington County eyes another summer youth program to boost opportunities.

Washington High Jazz Band to perform fund raising concert

The Washington High School Jazz Band presents a Friday at 8 p.m. public concert in the high school building to raise travel funds for an invite to the International Jazz Festival in Montreux. Tickets at the door for $5 adults and $2.50 for students. Director Lawrence Green leads the group.

Camp Acreage Expands at Lake Darling State Park

Lake Darling State Park readies ten more camping acres for summer use. Park officer Jim McEldoon notes about 25 campers on each of the last two weekends. Memorial Day marks beachhouse and boat rentals opening. Bullheads and a few catfish good for anglers. Water quality worsened by recent rains with silt and erosion hindering boating. McEldoon hopes clarity improves by Memorial Day for boating and fishing.

United Press International reports variable cloudiness with scattered showers or thundershowers across Iowa tonight and Friday. Lows range from the 40s in the northeast to the lower 50s in the southwest, while Friday highs reach the 50s in the northwest to the 60s in the southeast.

Washington Gets New Doctor As Clinic Expands

Norman Jensen confirms Dr. Jean Marshall of Phoenix will relocate to Washington around Aug. 1 to join Dr. G J Nemmers and Dr. E M Ahart at 301 South Iowa Ave. Her husband Dick will take a physical therapy position. The town now has six doctors as officials push to attract more physicians.

Verdicts Returned In Kalona Suits At District Court

Jurors reached a verdict at 11 05 p m Wednesday in two suits against Kalona Township heard in district court before Judge L R Carson. Plaintiffs sought 100 000 each for nuisance and land depreciation near sewage facilities. Jury sided with Kalona on nuisance counts and awarded 2000 to Vernon Hartzler and 6500 to Wayne Dawn for land depreciation. Directeur verdict in favor of French & Associates for co defendants was previously ordered.

Firemen Answer Two Calls With Drill At Plant

Washington firemen answered a 6 30 a m call to the Perfex McQuay plant where the alarm proved false as the automatic system had triggered. They were also called out last night for a small grease fire already extinguished and later joined a fire drill at the button factory building.

School Board hires staff and sets scholarships for 1972 73

Washington school district officials approved personnel for the coming year including the combined role of director of transportation, buildings and grounds assigned to Don Zwicki. New teachers and aides were named, scholarship amounts set for seniors, and plans discussed for release time study halls and a science club field trip.

Iowa Supreme Court overturns high school beer rule

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled 5 to 3 that the IHSAA beer rule barring varsity play for knowledge of beer in a car is unlawful. It said local districts and the state Board of Public Instruction should handle such conduct, not the association, which lacks authority. The decision centers on William Hal Bunger of Waverly Shell Rock High School whose eligibility was affected.

Washington YMCA Elects Five Directors At Annual Meeting

The Washington YMCA annual meeting in the Community Room elected Leon Hillman Gary Murphy Robert Nicola Jerry Ridley and Rex Lee to the board. President Robert Huber led the event that followed entertainment and a banquet. Retiring directors Don Minick Robert Reed John Walker and Richard Ross were honored with plaques.
