Hypothetical Day in Hains Case Examined in Trial
In Flushing on May 6 the jury heard the hypothetical question used by the defense to guide three alienists. They discussed insanity ranges from melancholia to manic depressive states as explanations for Captain Peter C. Hains shooting William E. Annis at Bayside Yacht Club. The expert said impulsive insanity spanned from first hearing Annis named on the yacht club float to the final shot, then a lull into quiescent mind before a relapse into mania.
