Origins of toasts and glass breaking in etiquette
Etiquette authorities trace the custom of breaking glasses after toasts to the bride’s toast and argue the act once protected the glass from dishonorable use. One expert links the impulse to youth, while others tie it to old English clinking customs noted by Shakespeare. Toasting also stems from dipping toast in wine and naming it for the lady in the bumper.
Familiar Misnomers in Animal and Material Names
The text clarifies common misnomers. Tortoise shell comes from Caretta imbricata and is not a shell fish. Cuttlefish are not fish but a mollusk related to octopus. Rice paper stems from tree pith. Whale baleen is not bone.
