Le Mars businessman Harry Carley filed for an injunction against a local Iowa pageant set for Sunday Monday and Tuesday. He argues the show is produced on a colossal scale that would cause tax hardship and may keep his children awake. Some locals call it a publicity stunt.
Mildred Steinrich a 17 year old from Newark New Jersey wins a family dispute over her elopement with Philip Kofsky 20 of Los Angeles California. She will marry at the Steinrich home in Newark with her father Max Steinrich consenting to the union.
Boone reports three railroad crossing accidents in three weeks tied to a 1931 Peculiar city ordinance banning locomotive whistling except for necessary signals. The rule, aimed at quieting trains, carries fines up to 100 dollars or up to 30 days in jail.
DES MOINES health officials warn that people sweating heavily in hot weather should add a pinch of ordinary table salt to each drink. Dr J M Hayek, director of health education, notes salt loss in sweat can reach 40 to 50 grams on hot days.
Des Moines reports the attorney general’s office dropped a hint that many state employees may owe federal income tax after the Supreme Court decision. The opinion avoided a direct ruling, deferring to federal jurisdiction, but noted that nonessential state departments can be taxed.
Spirit Lake hosts the seventy fifth annual conclave of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Iowa at Templar Park the week of July 3. Jesse M. Marsh of Keokuk leads the Sunday service in the pavilion. The school of instruction is set for Monday July 4 followed by the Grand Commandery convening Tuesday morning.
James Reed 54 of Council Bluffs died after a street fight June 18. George O Neil 651, a longtime Reed friend, is in police custody accused of fighting with Reed. Police say O Neil claimed Reed started the brawl. Reed sustained severe head injuries.
Des Moines reports say Maytag strike leaders and Newton workers plan to vote tonight on the company's peace proposal. About 400 sitdown strikers inside the Newton plant and 1,000 idle outside will decide whether to accept a 10 percent wage cut, 60 days of study, 30 days of negotiations, and potential arbitration after 90 days.
The sensational flight of two young bandits through two states ended in Kankakee Illinois where state police killed one and fatally wounded the other. During the chase they shot a state deputy at La Porte Indiana and kidnapped two others Charles Hahn and Walter Kowalczyk before freeing them unharmed after eight hours of captivity.
A representative of the unemployment compensation commission will be in Washington on Friday and every Friday thereafter at the post office from 8:30 a.m. to file new unemployment insurance claims under the federal law. Claims are prepared locally and sent to Des Moines for action, with interviews urged for all present.
Agnes Samuelson, then NEA president, rebuked Northwestern professor William Gellermann for calling the American Legion fascist. In a letter to Iowa Legion commander James Dolliver, she said the accusations do not fit and praised cooperation with the Iowa Department of the American Legion.

In Fargo, reports show Governor William Langer closing the gap on Senator Gerald Nye as the Republican Senate nomination contest nears a toss-up. With 1,089 of 2,260 precincts in Nye leads 51,978 to 48,320, and observers expect Nye strongholds to have already counted votes while Langer areas remain to report.
Iowa Southern Utilities in Washington raises the Washington to Sigourney high line capacity from 22 000 to 66 000 volts after completing a new substation. The project includes a switch tower and transformer. completion is expected in about two weeks at a cost near 40 000 dollars. A 20 man crew will relocate to Washington to build a new line from the west city limits to the plant and other southeastern Town contracts improve emergency capacity.
Des Moines reports the catfish season opens statewide in Iowa on July 1. Inland streams season starts May 1 but was extended to May 20 to permit, and a daily catch limit of fifteen applies with a 12 inch minimum length.
Hon. Oscar Hale a district court judge from Wapello Iowa seeks the Republican nomination for justice of the Iowa Supreme Court at the state Republican judicial convention. He has served 25 years on the district bench succeeding W S Withrow in 1913. Hale is a Louisa county native, Valparaiso College graduate, admitted to Kansas bar in 1893, attended Iowa State University law school, and admitted to Iowa bar in 1894.
Washington Chamber of Commerce Secretary E Schmitt announced most retail stores in Washington will close all day Monday July 4 with food stores open until 10 AM then closed all day drug stores closing noon to 4 PM barbershops closed all day. Banks court house offices and post office will also observe the holiday.
Fairfield Iowa June 29 The board of education asked the public works administration for a grant of 221000 toward construction of a new high school building to replace the one destroyed by fire. If obtained the grant plus 186000 insurance 50000 bonds and a 34600 bond issue would fund a 490000 structure.
A Farm Bureau sponsored grading demonstration in Washington County led by R. J. Tanner and Lester Macon with Rex Beresford of Ames grading 325 sheep and sending 100 home. J. D. Rabenold of Ainsworth representing Wilson & Co. paid for the flock, with prime animals at $9.75 and good to choice sheep at $9.25. the sale yielded about a dollar more per hundred pounds than expected.
Knights of Pythias District K holds a Thursday evening meeting at the Rendezvous with grand lodge officers expected. Local members and all seventh district lodges are urged to attend and bring candidates for Knights rank work. William Mohland, master of Washington lodge, requests attendance.
Karry Sizer of the Washing ton State bank was elected president of the Y’s Men’s club at its regular meeting. Other officers elected were vice president Dave Elder secretary Robert McFarlane treasurer Charles Barclay and new directors Bill Shannon Tom Duncan Lyle Wilson. The new president will attend the Y’s International convention in Toronto August 14 to 18 with speakers Sir Edward Beattie and Dr Francis Sayre. Election night featured lively campaigning and speeches. Mr and Mrs Fred AL Moore and Mr and Mrs John Westphal spent yesterday in Davenport.
Bruce Barton, New York congressman and ad executive, spoke at the Indiana Republican state convention urging the party to retain New Deal reforms while focusing on a jobs program. He argued Republicans can unite farmers, workers, and business leaders for shared prosperity, claiming the party has previously created employment.
A Washington Star clipping praised Senate members O Mahoney King and Borah and House members Summers Eicher and Reece named to study the business monopoly problem. Senator O Mahoney expects the probe to clarify the roles of business and government and foster prosperity with social control and orderly procedures.

Jim Swanson assistant manager of the MacLellan Store posted a 37 to lead qualifiers for the 4th of July tournament at Washington Country Club. Seventeen holes remain to complete the medal-score format with flights determined by qualifying scores. Golf balls will be awarded to the top three in each flight and players must submit qualifying cards to Phillips and Hebner or to Bill Shannon, Bob Oakley, or Oscar David of the tournament committee.
At the Tri county Medical society convention held yesterday, Dr W L Alcorn of Washington was elected president Dr J W Laird of Mt Pleasant vice president and Dr T M Mase of Washington secretary The next meeting will be in Fairfield in November A lecture on Hip Fractures by Dr Pp Conzgett of Dubuque followed a dinner for about 30 physicians from Henry Jefferson and Washington counties The group will join a national survey of medical needs and facilities sponsored by the Americas Medical association
