Ottumwa council accepts Collins Radio Co Cedar Rapids bid to furnish police radio equipment at a total cost of 1182 dollars with Wapello County sharing the expense. The decision marks a step in improving city police communications.
Waterloo resident KK Nichols, about 65, died of a heart attack while driving on a main city thoroughfare. Witnesses say he suddenly slumped at the wheel as the auto swerved, struck a curb, and collided with a vehicle driven by H. Lubbs, who suffered minor bruises.
Orville Gruwell announced he would reopen his roller skating rink despite the Ottumwa city council rejection of his operation petition. A test case is expected from his action as council members say they have no objection to the rink but claim Gruwell failed to comply with all ordinance regulations.
Des Moines Iowa State college reported a 1936–37 audit showing expenses of 4,372,169.76 against receipts of 4,403,474.81. State appropriation supplied less than half the funds. other income came from federal grants 72,600 tuition and fees 439,400 sundry sales 1,266 income 29,510 and restricted gifts 323,929. Business activities yielded a net profit of 7,648.66 with miscellaneous gains of 7,048.06.
O'Tool, 19, convicted ten days earlier of manslaughter in the April shooting of his father Charles O'Tool, was paroled by District Judge M W Kepler. He was sent to the Anamosa reformatory for eight years and given parole to Rev Paul Maguire of St Mary Catholic church after promising not to drink intoxicating liquor.
Des Moines reports the Iowa Treasury will start the next fiscal year with about 19.9 million dollars in reserve. Comptroller Murtagh notes 5.5 million remains in the general fund plus roughly 14.9 million set aside for special purposes. Government costs run about 1.25 million monthly, suggesting the fund could cover operations beyond mid October when new tax receipts are due.
Judge P. J. Siegers of Newton traveled to Washington yesterday to handle miscellaneous court matters. No sessions were held today, and he plans to return to Washington tomorrow for further duties.

The 1 791 foot 18 foot road links South Iowa avenue to the cemetery, with bids and right of way negotiations to proceed by Friday to avoid delays.
County Agent W J Roudabush set August 9 to 12 as the 4-H achievement show dates. Dr W McDonald of Iowa State College will judge the boys entries and Miss Nell Thompson will judge the girls exhibits. Eclipse Lumber yard offers space for boy displays, while girls’ exhibits return to the Methodist church basement. Health contest to select the healthiest boy and girl precedes the show. Six boys clubs display agricultural booths and demonstration teams to contest for state fair honors. Girls clubs expected to total 14 and show quality and size to exceed prior years.
Dr F W Eastwood pastor of Washington Presbyterian Church was elected moderator of the Presbyterian synod of Iowa at the Ames meeting. He succeeds Rev Edward L Gib son of Storm Lake. Eastwood had been chosen by Iowa City presbytery earlier, and his election is seen as formal approval of his extensive presbyterial work. The Ames synod gathering opened with about 250 ministers and lay delegates.
Funeral services for David Elmer Cherry will be held Wednesday at 2 30 p m at Sherman s funeral home with Dr Arthur Atack of the Methodist church officiating in the pastor s absence. Burial will be Elm Grove cemetery. Cherry died after a brief illness that began last Thursday He was born May 4 1871 in Warren county and lived on a Young America area farm since age seven He married Emma Fulton in 1896 and Elizabeth Ann Fulton in 1905 both predeceased him He survived by his widow Frances L McCoy Cherry two nephews Ben Cherry of Phoenix and John Cherry of Washington two nieces Mrs George Masson of Washington and Eula Cherry of Kenilworth Ill plus an uncle in Knoxville Iowa. One daughter Cecil Erima and two brothers and a sister are deceased. He remained active in the United Presbyterian church in Washington.
In a council meeting last night the city renewed seven beer licenses for one year starting July 1 at $200 each. The committee led by Mayor Lloyd Lytle found all applicants compliant with state law. Licenses go to H. A. Dougall Frank L. Casey Harvey Warfel Leo Nardy Cantoni Cantoni Mrs Edith Beatty and Charles M. Denison. Oral Mayo's license expires next winter.

Chinese aviation officials said their warplanes bombed and sank a Japanese warship in the Yanetze river below Fatang, with two more ships set afire. The tally reached 16 Japanese warships said to be sunk by Chinese aircraft in the river over nine days.
