The Washington Municipal Band will start its regular season of Wednesday night concerts on June 9 at 8 p.m. in Central Park conducted by Gary McCurdy. Most of last season’s members return, with new recruits joining. Everyone is invited to enjoy music every Wednesday through August 25.
A Pan American Boeing 707 hijacked to Havana with 9 aboard is set to leave Havana on Wednesday. The White House said Switzerland and Czechoslovakia relayed the plan, noting Castro did not immediately release the plane as in past hijackings. The incident follows U.S. actions against four Cuban fishing vessels and four captains face Miami federal trial June 7.
Des Moines reports Col. Haward Miller of the Town Highway Patrol praising Iowans for a responsible driving period during the three day Memorial Day weekend. Four fatalities on state roads marked the period, with two more deaths in out of state incidents. Miller noted the year’s death rate is the lowest since 1962 and tied the 1968 record, while stressing the need to avoid deaths.
A severe spring storm swept through Iowa with tornadoes, heavy rain, and high winds. Power outages hit Cedar Rapids and Marion while Water Street traffic stalled from flooding. Farms reported damage across northwest Iowa and Osceola County, with grain elevators and barns damaged and fertilizer spilled. No serious injuries reported. authorities described the scene as widespread but contained.
Palestinian guerrilla leader Kamel Nasser denounced Jordanian army actions as a massacre in Beirut and urged Arab states to aid the resistance. Israeli sources warned of possible new guerrilla attacks as the June 5 anniversary of the 1967 war approached in Tel Aviv.

Four 20 year olds Steve Weeks Harry Knott Richard Porter and Raymond Garton aided by a 13 year old boat observer saved the Eldon father and three children from a swamp sinking at Lake Darling. Weeks suffered a head injury during the rescue but all five reached shore safe and shaken.

A Hawarden soldier’s family learned of his death in Vietnam, the area’s fourth casualty. Flags were stolen from cemetery displays in Oelwein and near El town.
