Two deer wandered into the yard of M. E. DeLashmutt at 601 West Main Street early Saturday a.m. They trotted toward the business district before vanishing. No further sightings were reported.
Memorial Day ceremonies proceeded in Cairo with a flag raising, band concert, and parades after morning showers cleared. Police reported a weekend shooting spree injuring three officers and forcing evacuation of clergy and a lawyer from St Columba church in an armored vehicle. no arrests were announced. The incident involved United Front affiliates and followed 14 days of violence, with residents counting a large turnout for the city’s memorial events and community observances at local cemeteries.
UPI reports Mariner 9 and two Soviet probes head to Mars to map the planet, seek life clues, and watch for seasonal vegetation changes. Mariner 9 aims to orbit by November 14 carrying cameras and instruments for surface and atmospheric study.
A Pan American World Airways Boeing 707 hijacked from Caracas to Miami remains grounded at Jose Marti Airport in Havana after Pan Am President Najeeb Halaby appealed to Fidel Castro for the plane’s release.
