Snodgrass Couple Injured In Missouri Auto Crash

Word from Huston Missouri states Mr Marion Snodgrass and Mrs Snodgrass were injured in an auto accident and admitted to a local hospital. Their son Don traveled to Missouri to be with them while Mr Snodgrass, a pharmacist, is on vacation en route to Arkansas. Washington County plans a law enforcement meeting at 7 30 p m at city hall basement to discuss breath test rules and a bad check clinic for county officials.

Schlitz 40 Horse Hitch to Visit Davenport and Zearing

The Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company 40 horse hitch team will perform in Davenport at the Great Mississippi Valley Fair August 9-10 and in Zearing for the Labor Day Sept 4 celebration. Driver Dick Sparrow returns to his home state for the appearances.

Court study halts Iowa gambling crackdown at hearing

The Iowa Supreme Court enjoined Attorney General Turner from pursuing raids on carnival games until it reviews the scope of state gambling laws. Judge Moore set a 10 a.m. hearing to decide if the injunction will be permanent during the appeal by the Association of Iowa Fairs and others. The case centers on whether wagering on carnival games constitutes gambling under an 1851 law.

Flooding Rains Hit Iowa City and Statewide

Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall flooded Iowa City streets with more than three inches of rain. Ralston Creek spilled into city blocks while sandbag efforts came too late at the Civic Center. Multiple rivers and creeks prompted flash flood watches across eastern and southern Iowa with possible further rain and rising crests into the week.

Sewer bonds sold here by Washington city council

Becker & Downie Inc of Des Moines was the low bidder on sewer revenue bonds for Washington. Bids opened after a public hearing with no objectors, at an effective rate of 4.5135 percent, seen as very good for the city. Total interest cost $81,018. maturities through 1986 at 4.2 to 4.75 percent. Other bids ranged 4.5135 to 4.8831 percent from several firms.

Red Cross Meeting Set for Washington County Chapter

The Washington County Red Cross chapter schedules its annual meeting for Tuesday July 25 at 7 p.m. in the Captain's Table. Chapter chairman David Miksch notes one third of the board will be named, with reports heard and plans made for the coming year. Fair entries due July 19 for Washington County 4 H and FFA exhibitors

Washington County 4 H and FFA members must file fair exhibit entries with the Extension Office by Wednesday July 19 and pay the entry fee. Expected strong turnout across market beeves pigs lambs dogs horses ponies poultry photos and other projects though some categories may be lighter. New geology and small engine woodworking welding agronomy and electric projects are expected to boost displays and interest in self determined projects.

Washington considers curfew ordinance at council meeting

The third reading of a proposed city curfew ordinance was discussed as Washington officials noted vandalism increases and park problems. DeMolay observers spoke against the plan while Supt. Schlapkohl emphasized existing laws. The council will study suggestions and decide soon. Public works reported cemetery dirt use, nearly finished sewer work, and upcoming North Fourth Avenue paving.
