Nearly 200 people registered and many more toured the Washington County Home Sunday. Guides from local volunteers led tours of the building and grounds while residents shared handwork and activities. Mr and Mrs David Bauer, operators of the home, greeted visitors as refreshments were served.
A military tribunal in Israel convicted Kozo Okamoto, the lone Japanese survivor of the May 30 Lod airport attack, on four charges and sentenced him to life in prison. The court followed the prosecution and waived the death penalty, avoiding execution on three charges that could have carried it.
South Vietnamese paratroopers battled to the edge of the Citadel in Quang Tri city in a house to house fight. About 1,000 government troops reached within 200 yards of the stone walled fortress as allied artillery prepared to soften the defenders.
Akron health director Dr. John Morley warns tens of thousands of flies and worsening rat control issues as the garbage strike enters its sixth day. No trash collection since last Tuesday after 800 members of the State, County and Municipal Employes Union refuse to work over insurance.
UPI reports a Ramparts article by Winslow Peck claiming U S intelligence can crack every Russian code and track all military assets. Peck, a self described former NSA sergeant, asserts NSA monitors Soviet aircraft and submarines and even identifies pilots. He cites NSA feedback during the 1967 Six-Day War as an example of precision intelligence.
Polk County District Judge A. B. Crouch dissolved a 20 day temporary injunction and allowed Attorney General Richard Turner to continue raids on carnival games statewide. He ruled lottery and gambling statutes are clear illegal despite claims some games involve skill. The decision may affect next month's Iowa State Fair midway games.
State liquor agents shut the American Legion Club in Delhi for lacking a license. Bartender Eldon Wilson was arrested for dispensing liquor without a license. Patron Jack Hammer faced charges of disturbing the peace and intoxication. Protestors swarmed the town justice, while deputies and Trooper Denny Knutson aided crowd control. a tire was slashed but no injuries were reported.
Showers and thunderstorms continue tonight with locally scattered activity. Lows range from the mid 50s in the northwest to the 60s in the southeast. Rain ends from northwest to southeast as clearing moves in, and Tuesday high temperatures reach the 70s in the northwest to the lower 80s in the southeast.
Almer Anderson, 40, of South St. Paul, serving life for first degree murder, asks for a new trial claiming his Iowa court appointed attorney misled him during the 1954 trial. Karston was sentenced to death. his case later overturned. Davis County judge to rule this week.
President Nixon and Commerce Secretary Peter G. Peterson plan a broad push for expanded U S Russian trade. Talks in Moscow will address debt, credit mechanisms, and a maritime pact to allow mutual port access, following the grain deal and Nixon's summit. Rogers reports broad support for ending the Vietnam war.
A 22 year old Miami rookie officer reported his 27 year old brother Arthur Cheatham as the suspect in a robbery and auto theft case. The victim Frank Barkalow 64 was beaten robbed and his car stolen after being offered a ride home from a bar. Arthur fled toward Georgia but was later arrested in Deerfield Beach on a traffic charge and jailed.
A 22 year old Ethiopian student Lulseyd Tesla and his roommate face trial in Philadelphia on hijacking charges after commandeering a National Airlines jet. They held four stewardesses and two crewmen for 22 hours. Both are jailed on 1 million dollar bonds in Harris County. Tesla attempted suicide and was restrained with a straight jacket and tranquilizer.
Police questioned known associates of Thomas Eboli, Genovese underboss, after his Sunday murder in Crown Heights Brooklyn. Investigators noted cash on the body, a possible getaway car, and linked vehicles found nearby. Eboli lived in Fort Lee New Jersey and was part of the Genovese crime family power struggle following Joseph Colombo Sr.'s shooting.
Gov. Robert D. Ray said no intention to let State Bureau of Criminal Investigation agents raid gamblers in Iowa even if the attorney general wins his gambling crackdown suit. He cited focus on more serious crimes and flexibility only for certain cases.
Gov. Mandel and Rep. Mitchell faced 200 inmates at Maryland House of Corrections in Jessup after a 10 hour disturbance. Police planned a yard storm, but talks brought inmates back to cells. Six injured. $1 million in damage. concerns cited over food, custody, medical care.
