GOP Platform Battle Sparks Nixons Turn to the Right
At the convention the platform faced numerous fights. Rep John W Byrnes condemned the purge of hate purveyors as dangerous. Romney proposed a civil rights emphasis later defeated by voice vote. Discussion on presidential control of nuclear weapons failed, with Herter leading the anti‑amendment effort and Hickenlooper opposing it. Eisenhower urged party unity ahead of his 1956 reprise.
