Nixon asks Congress to end Medicare premium for elderly

President Nixon urged Congress to abolish the $5.60 to $5.80 monthly Medicare premium for about 21 million seniors. The $1.5 billion gap would be financed by higher payroll taxes as part of a broad aging program including more homemaker services and home health aides. The budget requests $50 billion for the aged next year, up $16 billion in four years, plus steps to tie Social Security increases to the cost of living and a 5 percent benefit boost next July. A separate note covers a Mutoscope rediscovery and sale to a collector in Kansas.
