Retiring carrier recalls joys of his job in Washington
Fourteen year old Gary Connelly, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Connelly, retired from his Journal carrier route on Jan 1 after two and a third years serving 97 to 108 customers in southwest Washington. He saved about $10 weekly, totaling over $1,100 in bond money with 5 percent interest, and plans to study architecture at Iowa State University. Gary cites meeting people, responsibility and business lessons as key gains, while noting winter and hot summers posed challenges and that a dog or two occasionally chased him. His near perfect record earned him the 65th Journal Watch in 1971. He leaves with high praise from a customer who called him the best paperboy in town.
