The Labor Department reports a 0.4 percent December CPI increase, the largest since the wage price freeze began. Food costs drove most of the gain, while nonfood prices held steady except for rising car, gas, and reading material prices.
U S Attorney Robert A Morse announced the indictment of 71 men as alleged members of a large steal-to-order auto theft ring. The group is accused of stealing between 1 000 and 3 000 late model luxury cars over a two year period, in New York.
The Selective Service announced a Feb 2 draft lottery this year, earlier than recent years, affecting all men born in 1953. It will determine the sequence of calls for 1973 draft processing and may be the last lottery with actual drafting.
Iowa Farm Bureau Federation plans a three story, $5 million office building in West Des Moines to be completed in about two years. Construction will consolidate 550 employees from six downtown Des Moines sites under one roof to improve efficiency and accommodate growth.
Nearly 400 American Negroes settled in Dimona Israel to seek peace and brotherhood but violent clashes erupted. One man, Cornell Kilpatrick, 40, was killed in the fighting as police detained about twenty Black Israelites. Readiness to settle mixed with discrimination claims amid tense Negev neighborhoods.
The Senate State Government Committee postponed final action on a House passed majority rights bill for 18 year olds. Five amended provisions were deferred, including parental support through age 21, prohibition on 18 year olds serving on school boards, and allowing obstetrical treatment for all female 18 year olds without parental consent. A drinking age change to 19 was not discussed.
United Press International reports a warning trend tonight and Saturday with colder air returning in the north Saturday afternoon. Lows range from the upper teens in the northeast to the 20s elsewhere. Saturday highs reach the 30s in the north to the 40s in the south.
Carolyn Ann Kallie, 26, petitions Johnson County District Court to overturn a state law that bars married women from changing their legal name. Assistant county attorney Patricia Kamath says the rule may be discriminatory though she questions its constitutionality. Kallie seeks to use her maiden name Levine as true personal identity.
Richard Charles LaPoint, 23, parachuted from a Hughes Airwest DC9 near northeastern Colorado after seizing the flight with a fake bomb. He was wounded on landing, tracked by footprints, and held in Sterling before transfer to Denver to face air piracy charges. FBI recovered the $50,000 ransom.
University of Iowa officials consider a three year medical degree option without reducing material. Dr. George L Baker notes three 11 month terms could replace four 9 month terms. A nationwide trend toward a senior year and faster tracks is cited alongside osteopathic and dental programs.
In San Francisco UP I report Harry Bridges met Canadian dock workers to urge them not to handle cargo diverted from the 24 U S West Coast ports strike. Nixon denounced the walkout in his State of the Union. Authorities in Vancouver gave priority to Canadian cargo. Unemployment and economic disruption feared as negotiations resume by Jan 31.
Tom Stockett and John Elliott, Washington County Democratic leaders, praised the Iowa Supreme Court for overturning the Legislature’s reapportionment plan. They said the court ruled unanimously that the plan was unconstitutional, criticized the Legislature’s gerrymander, and commended the court for redrawing the map to restore fairness amid partisan misuses and wasted taxpayer funds.
