Soviet could face 1973 wheat shortage despite large 1972 purchases
Washington reports say the Soviet Union may face a sizable grain deficit in 1973 even if weather is average. The Foreign Agriculture Service notes only about 80 percent of fall sown grain was planted for 1973, with spring plantings likely to expand to feed grains. Officials warn demand hinges on spring area use and weather, despite Russia’s record 1972 purchases of U S wheat, corn and soybeans.
