Winter storm sweeps Iowa causing delays and closures
A fast moving winter storm dumped up to eight inches of snow across Iowa, triggering flight delays, road hazards, and numerous school closures. The National Weather Service warned of more snow this week while highways remained hazardous and several areas recorded traffic incidents and one weather related fatality under investigation. Airlines reported delays and Des Moines canceled arrivals until 2 p.m. Snow totals varied across cities, with Des Moines seven inches and other locales reporting six or three inches.

Judge cancels session as snow delays Van Buren trial
Overnight snowfall postpones the trial of Van Buren County Sheriff Orval Lee with proceedings cancelled for today and resuming at 9 30 a m Wednesday. Testimony began Monday with Delbert Scull Van Buren County auditor and Waldo Smutz former sheriff followed by Bernal Hall a highway patrol trooper and three county supervisors Nedler Barker and Overstreet. Smutz verified rifles were in the sheriff's office during his tenure. Hall testified one or both were recovered after a jail break. The supervisors recalled a February 28 meeting when Lee said he sold a gun to buy a riot gun for about 92 dollars in March. They said they never asked permission to buy or sell a gun before Feb 28. Defense questions the involvement of James McGrath. Lee is defended by James Dorothy and Mac Wilson who notes he defends officers at no charge.

Des Moines UPI reports a federal court hearing Thursday on a request by the Iowa City Montezuma Railroad Shippers Association to block Rock Island from abandoning the 63 mile Hills to Montezuma branch. The group contends the ICC order is faulty while Rock Island cites $10,000 monthly losses and seeks closure. The line also serves Riverside, Barnes City, South English, Webster, Keswick, Thornburg, Gibson, Katona and Kinross. Judges Hanson Stephenson and McManus will preside at 10 a.m.
