Davenport fire officials probe the cause of an early Sunday morning blaze that gutted the second story of a Davenport building killing 23 year old Timothy Bonhof who was said to be sleeping in the apartment. Fire crews have not determined a cause.
UPI reports federal judge Edward McManus ordered Security National Bank in Sioux City to compensate 75 current and former employees totaling 53 619 dollars for sex based pay disparities. Back pay ranges from 4 350 to 5 dollars. payments due within 90 days. The case, filed in 1967, grew from an Equal Pay Act violation claim by the labor department.
World War I flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker remained in serious condition at Mercy Hospital in Miami after suffering a stroke on October 11. The 82 year old former Eastern Air Lines chairman arrived from New York to celebrate his birthday, and his condition was downgraded from critical to serious as he split time between New York and Miami residences.
River ice along the Mississippi worsened over the week reaching up to nine inches as far south as Guttenberg Iowa, holding seven towboats and 49 barges at Dresbach with two more boats north of Trempealeau. Sub zero temperatures expected Sunday night likely to worsen conditions and may leave some barges at Dresbach all winter.
The Iowa Highway Commission in its Sioux City district cited measurable wear on NW Iowa roads resurfaced in 1971, with some sections worn as much as three-eighths of an inch after one year. District engineer Walter Morris said the wear was not unexpected.
Washington High School presents a free concert Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the auditorium. The Senior Band will perform Christmas music with surprises including a brass ensemble and a narrated short story The Boy Who Wanted a Tuba. Santa is reportedly slated to attend with Rudolph nearby. The Washington County ASC announced results for the 1973 community committeemen across 15 townships: Brighton, Clay, Dutch Creek, English River, Franklin, Highland, Iowa, Jackson, Lime Creek, Marion, Oregon, Seventy Six, Washington, with details listing each township chairman, vice chairman and regular members and alternates. The county convention to select the county chairman and delegates will be on Saturday at 10 am in the Washington County ASCS Office, with discussion of program administration including Wheat, Feed Grain, REAP, Price Support Loans, Storage and Wool programs.
UPI reports Apollo 17 commanders Cernan and Schmitt set to land at Taurus-Littrow to explore 23 miles of terrain and install a nuclear powered science station. Evans remains in orbit as the mission aims to sample ancient lunar material and observe gravity waves and underground water.
Mrs. Duane Hazen 59 of Ainsworth dies at the scene in a three vehicle wreck on Highway 92 east of Washington during a heavy snowstorm. She lost control, sideswiped Henry Melvin and collided head on with Ronald Reif. Reif treated and released. Funeral held at Jones Funeral Home with burial at Ainsworth Cemetery.

United Press reports an ice storm across the southern Plains and central Texas with up to half an inch of ice in places. Freezing rain blankets central Texas to Arkansas and Tennessee while snow covers the Great Lakes region and northern Ohio Valley. Snow also falls in the southern California mountains, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, and western Montana as gale winds lash Lake Erie and fog shrouds the Gulf coast. Clear skies prevail from the Rockies to the Mississippi Valley and Pacific coast northward.
The Van Buren County sheriff Orval Lee faces trial after pre trial motions as opening statements and the first witness proceed. Prosecutor Gary Woodward claims Lee embezzled county property by selling a 1898 rifle to Ted Watson for three collector plates and $10 and a second gun for $69 and riot gun shells. defense argues the rifle belonged to former sheriff Bruce Davis and that no embezzlement occurred. The trial, moved to another county for fairness, begins amid questions of politics and personal ties.
Washington drivers were urged to adjust speed and driving style to weather and street conditions. Police Chief Jack Cherry said slick streets make stopping and starting harder and warned tickets will be issued for sliding through stop signs or failing to yield at intersections. He noted right of way rules and unmarked intersections contribute to many accidents.
