Eldon Kadera, 41, was arrested and jailed on intoxication charges after being beaten and robbed of about 150 dollars at a local tavern in Cedar Rapids. He was found dead Friday in the city jail as authorities prepared an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Pope Paul VI told Italian Catholic jurists that abortion is repugnant to Catholic and universal ethics and argued the fetus gains juridical rights from conception. He challenged the women’s liberation movement for distortions on the issue, insisting the first right of man is the right to life.
Police warned of limited optimism after construction workers uncovered two skulls and a thigh bone at Lehrter Station in Berlin. They asked Frankfurt prosecutors for dental records to match with bones, while Arthur Axmann previously testified Bormann died near a destroyed tank amid the Russian advance.
Mayor Donald Canney says Gerald Eggleston was fired from the Cedar Rapids Sanitation Department after a preliminary police investigation. Gov. Robert D. Ray named Robert L. Buckmaster a Waterloo lawyer and broadcaster to head the new Department of Environmental Quality. Buckmaster is among 15 named to the department, which starts in January 1973, to work with commissions on air water and solid waste policy.
Iowa Geological Survey will study the economic feasibility of desalting systems for towns using saline water. State geologist Dr Samuel Tuthill says a $50 000 federal grant funds the project, to be completed by September 1973, observing 10 Iowa communities with over 1000 ppm salt content while over 100 statewide exceed 500 ppm.
A United Air Lines Boeing 737 approaching Midway crashed into homes on Chicago’s South Side, killing most of the 61 aboard and injuring 18 survivors. The crash destroyed houses, sparked fires, and left a snow-blanketed area without power. National Transportation Safety Board investigators arrived as authorities sought causes, with pilots and flight crew reported killed.
The Iowa extended forecast calls for fair weather Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday expect partly to mostly cloudy skies with a chance of snow southeast. Lows range from 0 to 5 below Monday warming to 2 to 10 above by Wednesday. Highs will be 10 to 15 Monday and rise to 20 to 25 by Wednesday.
Cynthia Statler, 20, of Keota, was named the 1973 Iowa Princess Soya after 13 candidates at the Iowa Soybean Association meeting in Little Amana. Ellen Jean Kruse, 20, Ackley, was first runner up. Statler, a UNI junior, plans extension work and is a soybean producer sponsored by Exporter Elevator West Chester. she will compete at the national convention in Des Moines next August.
Iowa Board of Public Instruction moved to ask the 1973 General Assembly to create 15 new county school districts from the current 74. State Supt. Richard Benton calls the merger efficient, reducing duplicated offices and services while preserving complete school districts within each new county system. The plan would use existing vocational technical district boundaries and avoid crossing current district lines.
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird announced next year the Pentagon will begin closing bases to trim about 1 billion from the defense budget by 1975. The plan calls for one naval base on each coast and numerous small Army depots, facing congressional pressures in districts slated for closings. Laird spoke at Andrews Air Force Base after NATO talks in Belgium and noted SEATO discussions with Britain amid Australia and New Zealand drifting from the alliance.
Apollo 17 astronauts Cernan Evans and Schmitt prep for lunar descent as the Challenger docks with confidence. Ground control notes one unused latch and intermittent alarm but no major issues, while Schmitt supplies weather observations from space. Mission aims to descend into a volcanic ash filled valley on the moon.

Former President Harry S. Truman, 88, remains in extremely precarious condition at Research Hospital in Independence Missouri as doctors treat a lung infection. Officials said he rallied briefly, then slept, after receiving 32 ounces of liquid nutrition via a nasal tube, with his cardiac situation described as critical but slightly improved.
District Court Judge Arthur A. McGiverin Dec. 4 decreed the actual real estate value of the Crane Co plant in Washington at 8,682,562 for 1970, with an assessed value of 994,291. Crane estimated far lower and filed suit in 1970. Crane owes about 110,000 tax equivalent under 1971 rates, with city receiving roughly 40,000. Court costs split equally between the city and Crane. Board of Review and Land pay defendants' share. The ruling covers 1970 assessment only, while 1971 figures remain in court and 1972 valuations may follow, prompting possible ongoing disputes.
Johnson County Medical Examiner Dr T T Bozek said Barry William Freeman 22 of Iowa City died of injuries after his body was found Friday morning on a street in front of University Hospitals. Freeman was rushed to the ER but died on arrival. authorities speculate possible impact by a boom on a construction truck.
Washington County will again use a combined mailing and station system to assess personal property. Everyone owning personal property must list it by February 15, reporting options and station dates across the county. Stations operate in January and February with hours from 9 to 16 or 19 hours on Wednesdays.
