Michael Redick 16, son of Trooper Lt. Richard Redick of Cedar Rapids District 11, was struck while walking along Iowa 382 about five miles south of Solon by a female driver. The 10 p.m. crash remains under investigation with the driver's identity withheld.
Iowa Southern Utilities Co reported a system wide peak load of 282000 kilowatts on two occasions this week. The first peak occurred Monday August 14 between 1 and 2 pm and the second on Wednesday August 16 between 4 and 5 pm. The year’s prior high was 268000 kilowatts on July 21.
Frank Jirsa, 31, of Iowa City died after being shot early Thursday in Peoria. Mrs. Minnie Peel, 27, and her daughter Donna, 12, were wounded as an acquaintance of Peel fired on them. James Miles, 25, was arrested soon after. a pistol was found nearby. Peel described Miles entering the apartment and opening fire as Jirsa appeared.
Communist gunners fired a 43 rocket barrage on Da Nang air base killing an American airman and wounding 21, with 11 US aircraft damaged or destroyed. The assault also hit a nearby village, killing 27 civilians and wounding 25 others. In another front, Phantoms destroyed a rail bridge near Hanoi and B52s pressed strikes across North and South Vietnam as Kissinger met Thieu in Saigon.
Des Moines reports chief organizer Kenneth Falk predicts a possible attendance record for the 116th Iowa State Fair under the Discover Canada theme. He cites powerful entertainment and events while noting weather and a court case over midway gambling could affect turnout. Headline performers include Bill Cosby Bob Hope George Kirby Sonny and Cher and Paul Anka with Canadian and Mexican exhibits and new log rolling and live bear acts boosting the fair’s appeal.

Rep. Fred Schwengel of Iowa introduced a reform bill at a Washington news conference proposing elimination of the seniority system and proxy voting, expanded minority staff on committees, and full committee review of all programs to make Congress more efficient, open, and responsive to the people.
In Miami Beach a White House source said President Nixon will not intervene in the GOP clash between large and small states over 1976 convention delegates. Agnew also stays neutral, signaling a likely floor fight on liberal efforts to empower large-state delegates and expand voting power amid conservative pushback.
The Senate passed a bill to convert the U S measurement system to metric over ten years with a voluntary industry shift. An 11 member board would encourage conversion while no compulsion exists. The measure cites savings in engineering time accuracy and education and notes 11 percent of the economy is already metric mainly in medical engineering military drugs and science.
United Press International reports little change in Iowa with continuing heat through today and Saturday. A slight chance of thunderstorms exists in the northeast corner today and tonight. Highs are in the low to mid 90s with tonight’s lows near 70.
