A spectacular blaze destroyed the $1,000,000 Western Boat Building plant in Tacoma Washington. Firefighters fought two hours to contain the fire and prevent spread to nearby structures and the city bridge. The roof collapsed and embers damaged a tuna boat under construction as crowds of over 10,000 watched. Investigators planned to determine the fire's cause.
New Delhi reports a massive earthquake in eastern Tibet near Shangri La with widespread tremors felt across India and Pakistan. Officials say hundreds may have perished and initial damage is limited to cracked foundations while seismographs record the event as one of history’s greatest quakes.
Correspondent and crew aboard a B 29 superfortress describe a mass bombing run against North Korean Reds west of the Naktong River on August 16. The report details visual bombing, ground observations, and a successful return after a damaged engine cowling forced a three hour flight home.
An educators' committee proposed financing Iowa school costs on an ability to pay basis and delivering the plan to the 1951 legislature. The scheme divides the state into 120 districts with equalized contributions, half by uniform levy and half by a graded levy, costing about 82 million dollars annually with the state covering around 32 million.

Mrs. Sarah Leichty, age 78, died at her son Paul’s home four miles north of Wayland. Funeral services are set for Zehr funeral home at 1 30 and Sugar Creek church at 2 o clock Thursday with Rev Willard Leichty officiating. Interment in Sugar Creek cemetery. Born January 16 1866 in Washington county, she married John Leichty March 17 1887. Survived by sons Noah Winfield Aaron Ainsworth and Paul four miles north of Wayland. son Emery preceded her in death in 1944.
Washington county RYP club holds regular monthly business and recreational meetings and organizes community projects. A bake sale planned at Iowa Southern Utilities company on Saturday August 19 at 2 00 p m aims to fund these efforts. County officers include Dale Galdwellt president and Leroy Hotle vice president.
