Washington August 17 The administration's universal military training proposal faces slim odds for approval this session though defense officials remain hopeful they can win major support in Congress. Louis Johnson urged enactment for 17 year olds with a plan delaying start until after the Korean War. The bill would require 17 year olds to register for six months to a year of training with pay of 30 dollars monthly plus allowances per dependent. High school deferments and hardship or physical reasons could delay service.

Collision at North Second and West Second streets
At 4 50 pm Wednesday two cars collided at the North Second and West Second streets intersection in Washington. Reather Wieneke's car struck Norma Turnipseed's as Turnipseed traveled west. Wieneke suffered minor facial cuts on a nose, and passenger Deloris Craig was treated. Damages totaled 375 dollars to the Wieneke car and 450 dollars to the Turnipseed car.

First Korean War Criminal Captured
The first Communist war criminal of the North Korean War has been captured by American forces northwest of Taegu. He is accused of murdering 26 American POWs on Hill 203 last night. Survivors are prepared to testify. the prisoner is sent to 8th Army HQ for higher handling. The incident involved tanks, Russian submachine guns, and brutal treatment of surrendering troops.

Man Kills Sweetheart After Marriage Refusal
Max Shannon 23 confessed to pushing Sally Barden 19 from a second floor balcony and slitting her throat after she refused to marry him. The killing occurred as her 16 month old son slept nearby in Minneapolis. Shannon said he could not stand it any longer. He and Barden met in Fort Dodge Iowa earlier this summer.
