St James School plans new term registration and IGE program
Pupil registration will be held Friday August 18 from 9 to 11 30 a m and 1 to 2 30 p m to settle book rental fees insurance lunches and other details. Book rental and fees total 13 50 per student. Insurance via Mutual Protective Insurance Co Omaha Nebraska will be available. Lunches cost 40 cents with two week tickets for 4. First day of school is Thursday August 24 with 8 45 a m start and 3 15 p m dismissal. St James joins five elementary buildings in the Washington system in the Independently Guided Education IGE program emphasizing personalized instruction, parental involvement, and unit based multiunit organization within a two unit plan for language arts this year. New teacher Miss Barbara Achen joins the middle grade team alongside returning staff led by Sister Mary Gabrielle Hagerty Principal.

Danville Regional Fire School Announces 6th Annual Event
The Des Moines County Firemen's Association sponsors the 6th Annual Southeastern Iowa Regional Fire School at Danville Community High School on Sunday August 27. Registration opens 8 a.m. with four classes covering Essentials of Firemanship Pumps Fire Tactics and Arson plus a special class for wives. Area instructors and a Fire Equipment Manufacturer from Alexis Illinois will conduct sessions. The event invites all Southeast Iowa and West Central Illinois firemen for an all day program and noon lunch, followed by a 3 to 4 p.m. General Assembly by the Southeast Iowa Shriners on Children Burn Hospitals.
