In a Sunday city game Washburn beat Mellen 10 to 1 though spectators condemned Mellen as unsportsmanlike for crowding the plate and deliberate hits. The crowd saw the home twelve play well from start to finish while the visitors faced warnings from the umpire.
The Loveland company reports selling land to Minnesota buyers including J Beach and Freak E Plum who will move this fall to sections 5 485 and 1948 5 respectively. Mr Starning and Mrs Bell purchased a tract in 1948 5, old Wisconsin farmers comment on land value. William Gustafson plans to clear acres in Bigelow addition as crews prepare section 31 near the schoolhouse. The firm aims to open a farm on 1948 5, bringing five improved farms in the county once haying ends.
The Norris is loading lumber at the Thompson dock this week. The Lapsley family left Tuesday for North Dakota where they will make their home.
The Attorney General's opinion is awaited as Socialist party candidates face a dilemma. The primary law requires nomination papers to carry 3 to 10 percent of party votes and signatures from at least four precincts in the county, complicating how any Socialist could file.

Examinations for Bayfield County teachers certificates will be held in Washburn at the Pioneer school August 10 to 13. Mr and Mrs Charles Lee and their children of Spooner visit Mr and Mrs William Flynn for the week.
The Public Library reports a near four thousand increase in books borrowed year over year despite population decline. There were 22 623 total loans, with 15 780 fiction and 6 848 non fiction. 4 570 volumes now on shelf, 470 added that year. 1483 borrowers and 77 new patrons served. annual meeting was adjourned for one week.
The steamer Howard M. Hanna, Jr. unloads 9 571 tons of coal at Northwestern Fuel docks while the schooner Tyrone lies at the same dock with 3000 to 4000 tons. The Hanna is a new boat on its third trip and over 500 feet long drawing visitors in port.
W A Loveland of Washburn and Minneapolis imported two crates of berries that wowed Twin City papers. One photo shows a dozen boxes, another calls them the only real strawberries displayed. Reports praise fruit as rich and large as apples, with many locals impressed and Loveland claiming high demand and big earnings potential for growers.
John Walsh of this city, a Democratic National convention delegate, was selected by Wisconsin to deliver the seconding speech for Indiana's John W. Kern for Vice President. The brief speech drew enthusiastic reception and earned praise in many papers.

Odanah railway business picked up with extra crews. A M Warden builds a residence west of the city. Strawberries for fall planting offered by R Steinert with plants for sale and prices.

Notable entries include L O Haug to Alice Cassidy for e4 ne 30-446 at $1, Bayfield Realty Co. to Joseph Sanders for 12 Village lots at $295, Samuel Snively to Lewis Heins for 342 acres at $62,570, and Emma Me Pherson to B B Croup for all of section 29-49-6 at $3000. Other transfers cover various lots, sections, and adjoining plots with nominal consideration.
Northwestern Fuel docks handled ten large coal ships in 36 days discharging a total 70 535 tons. The monster freighters kept dock crews busy around the clock with evening overtime. The fleet is expected to shrink slightly but total coal traffic may nearly double later this season.

George S. Barnes and Judge Sauve interviewed supporters in Iron River on Tuesday. Barnes, a candidate for Member of Assembly, denied any intent to create a new county from Bayfield County and authorized the Times to state he would not consent to any division.
