Walter Fitch Jr. Co sets Utah shaft sinking world record
The Walter Fitch Jr. Company of Eureka Utah established a new world record by sinking the Water Lily shaft for Chief Consolidated Mining Co. 4276 feet in 31 days from July 16 to August 15 an average of 13.8 feet per day. The operation used three shaft compartments and 18 machine workers with bonuses awarded to crew, and the project advanced with efficient timbering and hoisting systems despite tough porphyry and white time shale geology.
