The Pine Creek Mining and Milling company reports a successful strike in a crosscut near the tunnel face where ore of milling grade appeared in the first round. Stockholders H. W. Ingalls of Mullan and others backed renewed work, aiming to locate the lost ore shoot and define its width and extent alongside the existing vein.
The Columbus Mining compressor arrived in Spokane and was sent to Prichard for quick installation on East Eagle creek, with a boiler expected to arrive to prevent delays. The Star group near Kellogg features a proven ore body, a planned million dollar electro lytic zinc plant, and a crosscut aligning with the Morning vein, signaling major district development.
Frank C. Batley secretary of the Northwest Mining association and Charles H. Goodsell mining engineer, both of Spokane, were in the city on Placer Creek Silver Lead Mining and Milling business. Development resumed after a lull. a 40 foot shaft exposes a 7 foot vein. A crosscut tunnel extends 450 feet below the shaft to reach the vein, but a newly cut 3 foot vein differs, suggesting the sought vein remains unreached. Work shifted to two new claims with a tunnel toward the Placer Creek vein. An older tunnel aims to reach the vein in about 2000 feet, after which drift will extend to ~1000 feet depth. High U S & R Official Here H A Guess of New York, vice president of American Smelting & Refining and managing director of Federal Mining & Smelting, visited the district before eastward departure to discuss mining interests.
Reports say Guggenheim interests through Federal Mining Smelting may acquire all Day mining properties including Northport smelter. While some locals welcome the deal, observers note no tangible basis and point to Days’ struggles in smelting and refining after misjudgments.
The crosscut from the Hecla mine toward the Star vein reaches the footwall, defining a 15 foot wide lead-silver ore shoot in quartzite with minimal zinc. A second crosscut 40 feet away hits ore of better grade, proving continuity via plug holes. Plans call for drifting the big ore shoot, with depth growth and rapid progress beyond 100 feet. The Pine Creek holdings show a strong iron capped outcrop over 1500 feet, attracting regional interest alongside other near deposits. The scheme includes a large 2000 level bin and 1000 ton skip pocket, with waste rock to be disposed of in Hecla stopes or shipped by rail if needed. The overall project may open other nearby prospects like Omaha Midway Summit Flynn Group, potentially transforming the district.
Colonel Chester T. Kennan arrives in Wallace to inspect Pony Gulch property under Kennan Mining, noting a rich scheelite ore deposit and a gold ledge. His group controls the White Swan mine near Baker City and will reopen the smelting plant at Sumpter to handle White Swan ore. James H. Taylor, Bullion Mining manager, returns from California amid shifts in mining operations and smelting capacity.
