Michigan to Cut Wire Rates Between Peninsulas April 21

The Michigan State Telephone Company filed a rate schedule with the Public Utilities Commission to lower tolls and long distance rates between the upper and lower peninsulas. Judge Franz C. Kuhn notes the policy aims to bring distant Michigan towns closer, despite higher wire mileage across the Great Lakes. The plan bases rates on air line distances, not wire distance, promising reduced costs for connections between northern cities like Menominee, Escanaba, Ironwood, and southern Michigan. The change may reduce company revenue but is expected to foster business and social ties across the state.
