Vidalia business leaders last week organized committees to host a Fourth of July celebration with a free barbecue expected to feed 5 000 to 8 000 people. The event includes two baseball games and a midday barbecue followed by swimming at the town pool with further entertainment to be announced.
Messrs. Abbie Vann and Sig Holmes head a new truck line with regular Vidalia to nearby towns schedules. Contracts with local shippers are signed and the proprietors promise first class service, quicker deliveries, and reduced loss and damage on shipments.
The condition of Tom Tippett Cicero Mathews and Fred Mathews wounded in a Sharpe Spur shooting on the 6th has improved doctors say all have a fair chance to recover Tippett and Fred Mathews are at Vidalia Hospital while Cicero Mathews rests at home near Sharpe Spur.
A church league program outlines a service with songs and prayers followed by a story of Paul as revealed in Philippians by Geo S Rountree. Scripture readings by Five Leaguers, Rebecca McBride reads, vocal duets by Mrs McBride and Mrs Napier. Includes six Leaguers one minute quotations, Wade Linder parable Forgotten man, conscience reflections by Mrs R R Price and Abbie Mathews reading, offering and league benediction.
The Junior Mission Band of the Presbyterian church held its election for the coming quarter. Officers to take office on June 19 include Egbert Anderson as president and Margaret Jones as vice-president. Katherine Jones chairs the program committee with Victoria Cromartie secretary and Ruth Cromartie on the visiting committee. Lucy Poe serves on the music committee, with Mrs J E Mercer as director.
The Vidaia city council awarded the sewer system contract to J. B. McCrary Co of Atlanta after a bid tied to a $51,400 cap and a not to exceed cost. Work could start mid July with local labor and overseen by the council, with anticipated savings versus earlier estimates and other cities reporting large savings.

Postoffice officials are issued revolvers and must wear them while handling valuable mail. An order from Uncle Sam requires all employees with access to mail to carry a sidearm for quick access.

Tech board of county equalizers in Lyons warns citizens who have not filed tax returns. Those who miss the deadline will face double taxation. The board, consisting of J. M. Meadows B. F. Ware and J. W. Linder, expects to meet for about two more weeks.
Pierce Holmes, a University of Georgia Law School graduate, left for Athens to receive his degree and then proceed to Washington, D C, to accept a civil service position. He plans post graduate study in law at a prominent Washington law school during his stay.
The Vidalia Methodist Sunday School plans its annual picnic Friday at Pendleton Creek near Lyons. Trucks and autos will be provided for all. members should meet at the church Friday morning between 9 30 and 10 o'clock.
