The first co operative hog sale in Montgomery county at Ailey yielded a clear profit of about 600 dollars for farmers. Two carloads totaling 196 hogs sold for 2353.15 pounds 27 911, prices 9 35 8 85 7 85 and 7 35. Harper Bros of Albany bought the hogs.
Mt Vernon Methodist Church hosts a Wednesday night service on July 26 at 8 45 p m with a program including song and prayer led by Ernest Stanford scripture by Minnie Abt a violin quartet and talks on the prohibition law and its enforcement by local youth and church members
Soperton reports Dan Davis transferred from Soperton jail to a convict camp in St Marys marking the end of a famed murder case. Davis was twice convicted in Treutlen county for the killing of William Hall a tenant farmer on the Davis farm. Hall was lured into a car with Davis and others and allegedly poisoned whiskey sealed with a $30,000 life insurance claim. Associates faced varying outcomes as Davis’s trials, appeals, and state witnesses unfolded with extensive legal involvement.
Two bales of the 1922 cotton crop were shipped by express from Moultrie. One bale weighing 550 pounds was grown by A. B. Rogers and sent to Savannah, and another of 490 pounds from Horkan and Lindsey went to Atlanta. The Horkan-Lindsey bale was the first ginned, and both bales were to be sold at auction. The crop is opening rapidly in Southwest Georgia and shows potential for a strong season despite earlier boll weevil damage.
Congressman W. W. Larsen met admirers in the city on Tuesday as he prepares for a rare period of rest with no need to mount an active re election campaign this summer.
Lee Currie was found guilty of first degree murder in Toombs Superior Court for the killing of Burleigh Phillips and sentenced by Judge R N Hardeman to be hanged September 1 1922. The case featured lengthy defense by Col E J Giles and final jury verdict after a two day trial.
An August 12 examination will be held in Vidalia for the postmaster position at Claxton Georgia with a $2000 yearly salary. Appointment will follow the examination unless service needs dictate transfer or promotion. The exam is not Civil Service but runs under an executive order from May 1921.
Sixteen scouts and scoutmaster Prof. W. L. Downs left Vidalia Monday at 8 for a week at Houston Factory near Perry. They traveled by Buick and Kemp bus to see the countryside, with plans to return next Monday. Members listed include Otto Tate and Le Roy Meadows. Walter Jenkins could not go due to his uncle’s illness. Soperton troop also to join camp this week.

Governor Hardwick will appoint Dr. M. M. Parks of Milledgeville as state school superintendent, succeeding Dr. M. L. Brittain who resigns August 1 to become president of the Georgia School of Technology. Parks currently leads the Georgia Normal and Industrial School.
Workmen fenced Mathews Park area donated by Geo N Mathews as the Woman's Club of Vidalia plans walks swings and seating. The central site across from the union station will serve travelers and residents with flowers shrubs and landscaping in coming weeks.
The first open cotton boll of the new crop was brought in by J. E. Thompson from a nearby Vidalia farm. Thompson reports prospects good for a fair crop as harvest begins.
Roscoe Peacock of Eastman has withdrawn from the Twelfth Congressional District race. With Peacock out, Congressman Larsen is assured the nomination and can devote full time to duties in Congress. Larsen’s supporters praise his record and continued service to constituents.
Miss Lilly Smith returned from vacation with the McQueen family in Savannah. Smith is a popular employee of the Southern Bell Co. Mrs. R. M. Stanley offers hemstitching and picoting services with all thread furnished at Vidalia Hardware Co. Store in Vidalia Georgia. Prices are reasonable. tf.
Milledgeville sources note Dr Brittain, a state education board member, elected president of Georgia Tech by the board of trustees. He succeeds Dr K G Matheson who resigned to head Drexel Institute in Philadelphia. Park remains at Georgia Normal and Industrial College, granted one year vacation leave after ten years of service.
Rev. M. A. Rico, 58, pastor of Oakridge Baptist Church in Ailey Georgia, was cleared of justifiable homicide in the killing of his son in law William Copeland 32. Rico stabbed Copeland ten times with an ice pick during a struggle while defending his bed ridden daughter. He was released after the coroner jury verdict.
The Georgia State Board of Public Accountants and the CPA of Georgia urge true CPAs to possess extensive tax law knowledge for returns. They warn against using the title unless legally qualified, noting it is a misdemeanor to misrepresent credentials.
Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Sunday school held a picnic at Shamrock Springs last Wednesday. The group rode to the grounds by church vehicles, enjoyed swimming and kodaking, then had a bounteous luncheon with lemonade before returning in the afternoon.
