Meat Prices and Incomes in 1937 Relative to Prewar Levels
Retail meat prices have risen in the past 12 months yet consumer incomes keep pace with earlier levels. If production had not declined in 1934 and 1936, total meat spending would be similar, but buyers would get more meat per dollar. In early 1937 beef prices were 20 percent below 1924–29 averages, pork 14 percent lower, and lamb 14 percent below the average.
