National Guard Faces Good and Bad News Locally

Vernal National Guard units face mixed outcomes as about 90 guardsmen mobilized for active duty at Ft. Lewis are slated for release between August 1 and time. Proposals to cut eight Army Reserve and National Guard divisions threaten to close Vernal Armory and affect nearby armories in Leh and Price if the plan proceeds. Major Gen Maxwell B. Rich and Gov George D. Clyde oppose the culback, with other states likely affected. Rich has until May 3 to choose which Utah engineer battalions would be eliminated.

Public Meeting Airs School Leeway Vote

An 8 30 am Vernal crash damaged two trucks and a 1960 Ford Falcon on Main Street. Morris T Thompson, 67, of Tutus Oregon, owned the 2 ton International truck loaded with side show items. Sam Tolle, 10, drove the city trash truck. The impact also damaged the Falcon. passengers were uninjured. Police Chief Claudius Banks investigated. Separate notes cite a public meeting about a leeway school finance vote and upcoming meetings, with legal questions about voting eligibility in Provo and actions by the Duchesne School District and Utah Education Association leaders.

Principal John Blazzard Undergoes Surgery at Veterans Hospital

John Blazzard vice principal of Ainish High School underwent surgery on his leg Wednesday morning April 25 at the Veterans Hospital in Salt Lake City. The operation was very successful and Mr Blazzard is expected to return home Friday.

Culverts Divert Water From Steinaker Feeder Canal

Culverts have been installed to divert water from the Steinaker Feeder Canal into the reservoir during drop repairs. About six drop structures require work. Three culverts were installed near the 118th drop to handle up to 200 second feet, though this week only about 15 second feet were flowing.

Wild Driving Levels Pole Cuts Off Power

A driver named Gale Brows tr 16 of 155 East 2nd So leveled a utility pole at 5th East and 2nd South, knocking out power for three to four hours in the southeast city area and as far as Naples and Ashley. The 1037 Chevrolet suffered about 300 dollars in damage. pole and equipment cost about 200 dollars. The driver was cited for reckless driving and legal consumption of beer. Police Chief Claudius A. Danks investigated the incident.

Tanker Topples Near Duchesne Causes $12000 Loss

A tanker overturn near Duchesne on US 40 caused about 4000 gallons of avila and gasoline to spill. American Oil Company officials say $12000 in losses occurred. Driver Desmond Olsen Thomas of Bountiful was treated for facial cuts and released. Fire hazard prompted sand to cover spills. traffic halted briefly.

Public Meeting To Hear Talk On Council

Vernal Youth Service Council sponsors a public meeting in the county building courtroom Monday at 8 p m to hear Dr J Weldon Moffitt of the University of Utah speak on Community Coordinating Councils. Cities across the United States form such councils to pool time energy and talents and Vernal supporters believe a coordinating council is essential to the growing city. Dr Stor m has been invited to explain organizing a community and benefits of such a council. (Continued on page 8)

Funeral for Canal Victim Held Saturday

Funeral services for Lance Allen Broadaway 4 were held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Mocser Ward Chapel after he drowned Wednesday afternoon near his home. The service featured prayers, music by Ruth L. Jones and the Sawards, and tributes from speakers including Clarence E. Jones and Thar on Merkley. A separate report notes the US Defense Department plans a 700000 dollar Uintah Basin Seismological Observatory near Vernal, under VELA UNIFORM with construction by Texas Instruments and operation by Air Force Technical Applications Center.

K and K Texaco Service Station Changes Hands

Jess York and his son Jesse TL York completed the purchase of K and K Texaco Service Station at 332 West Main from Kenneth Snow. The service station will be known as York's Texaco Service. The elder York was formerly a mechanic at Fleet Tire Service and had worked at Vernet repair shops. The family recently moved from Moab.

Ute Bear Dance Set Thursday for Spring Welcome
